I got into Davis as a freshman for fall 2007, but for San Diego I will have to wait until the winter quarter to attend. Im interested in majoring in some type of liberal arts: history, poli sci, english, etc. I know UCSD is better known and is a top tier, but i'm scared about going in late and having to live off campus. In the end, what will be the better choice?

UCD is a topflight UC campus as is UCSD. They are also perhaps the two most academically competitive campuses in UC. I'm an aggie alum, but I also hear great things about UCSD. You will receive a great education at either institution. You should also consider the environment of each and which would best suit you. Davis is a great college town and is very student friendly. You can get by without a car and everyone rides a bike. San Diego is geographically enormous, you will almost certainly need a car. If you like a big city and everything cosmopolitan, then San Diego is for you. The weather is also much nicer in San Diego.

Call UCSD's housing services department and ask them if you will be guaranteed on campus housing when you enter in as a freshman in the winter quarter.

UCSD has a 2 year housing guarantee for its Fall 2007 incoming freshman, so you might have a 2 year guarantee because you are an incoming freshman, but i'm not really sure. You will have a better answer if you call them. Here is the email for the Housing services at UCSD: housinginfo@ucsd.edu the number is (858) 534-4010
I found the number on their office of grad studies web page, but you should still give it a try.

Then decide whether you want to go to Davis or UCSD.

They're both top flight schools, but they're not the best UCs. Berkeley and UCLA are.

I've got a couple of diplomas from these middle UC schools and while I'm proud of my schools, I know they're not as good as Berkeley and UCLA.

I had a couple of friends do late admit for Berkeley. Totally worth it. I've never heard of a late admit not getting housing when they're supposed to enter (for you, Winter quarter). If you're just worried about Fall quarter, maybe just take classes at a JC at that time. Stay home and do it. Be cheaper that way. Unless they let you take Extension courses, you can't take classes at SD anyways. So, might as well save money and just take some classes at a local JC until it's time to go.

I'd definitely go to UCSD in winter, even tho Davis isn't that bad either.

I was admitted to Berkeley as a spring admit. I later heard from a friend who went to Berkeley that the late admits were treated better than the other students. However, I never regretted going to Davis instead.

I say go wherever you most want to go. UCD is also top tier, and a very good school for humanities majors.
