It has a connotation meaning the adults dressed up, went to a place with good atmosphere, and left the kids with the sitter. The service was always spectacular, it was special. It's a very old term from back when people actually dressed up and dining out was something special.

My place used to be called a supper club. I thought it was too outdated so I changed the name. People were calling asking how much they had to dress up or if they had to wear a tie. I nixed that. I wanted anyone to come in as long as they paid for the food!

They used to be where suburban couples went out on Saturday night- they usually had live entertainment and dancing as well as food- kind of an all-inclusive evening. Think the name comes from Country Clubs.

Don't know if this is the case everywhere, but around here they are called that in dry counties. (Counties you can't serve alcohol). The restaurant can get around that law and serve drinks if they make people become "members" of the club.
