I'm not a lawyer & I don't have a lawyer. I 'm seeking retroactive child support from my ex-husband, and am representing myself (he has a lawyer). I began cross-examining him last day in court, and we're going back in 2 days. I don't know what I'm doing! The judge was getting annoyed with me for asking certain questions and now I'm confused! I don't know what kinds of questions I can and can't ask. I just spent the last 2 hours on the internet trying to find out how to cross-examine & couldn't find anything! Also, how do I make a closing statement? Thanks for your help!

You would have been better off paying a lawyer. Being your own lawyer can backfire on you. Like you said you don't know what your doing and there are questions you could have asked which would have helped you. Go online and you will find some good web sites that will help you about the laws with child support. Stay calm and don't allow yourself or his lawyer to make you so nervous you can't think good. When giving your closing statement keep it to the point and don't ramble about something that doesn't pretain to the case.

Well....you should get a lawyer. They know what they're doing. You don't. I thought you need 2 people in order to cross-examine someone but I'm probably wrong. As for your closing statement, think of it as writing an English essay and the closing statement is your "conclusion" so basically wrap up all your good arguments into one statement and re-state your main point. Also they recommend lawyers make eye contact with the jury and/or judge for 4 seconds because this is the amount of time it takes to establish a personal connection. Good luck...

you could have gotten a lawyer that would only get paid if u won, so in your case since your husband seems more well off you lawyer could have requested that your ex-husband or whoever observed your court and attorney fees. in the end u would have gotten your child support and also your court and lawyers fees paid as well. if the judge seems annoyed by u than he might not be in your favor and you might lose the case. a closing statement is just a mere conclusion just sum everyhting up but make it strong cause that will be the last thing on the judge's mind before he makes hi decision. also, u can still get a lawyer.there are lot of lawyers out there that will not charge u u just have to search.
