"Emo" was originally a shortened way of describing the musical genre, "Emotive Hardcore". It later was called "Emotional Hardcore" because of emotionally driven lyrics. Fans were said to be "depressed" as the lyrics were rubbing off on them.

What I think you're referring to is the people who listen to "Emo" artists and dress like them. As I said, fans of the genre were said to be "depressed" and are now stereotyped as being suicidal cutters.

BUT, emo is a type of music, not an adjective to describe cutters, okay?

Okay, I've been called Emo and/or Goth quite a bit, but I firmly believe labels are for soup cans. Here's what I've gleaned:

Goth is pretty hardcore. White face paint, black lipstick, piercings, vampires, etc.

Emo is kind of like Goth, but Emos are very in tune with their emotions. They talk about feelings and pain, deep pain, quite a lot. Poetry, false suicide notes, etc. Some Emos and Goths are Cutters (people who cut themselves) but anyone can be a Cutter. Someone who practises self-mutilation needs psychiatric help. Emos also like to dress a certain way, or several certain ways I suppose. Vintage clothes are good, secretary-style dresses or plaid "old man" pants. Lots of mascara and eye liner, etc.

Scene is a little bit milder than Emo. They dress and talk much the same, but instead of talking about cutting themselves, they talk about other people hurting themselves. Scene people are very emotional, and into emotional pain.

Apathy is the key word here.

an emo person is someone who's emotionally distraught. this means that they hurt inside. being emo is usually caused by family problems, being bullied, and all of the stuff along these lines. Being emo is misunderstood, so people continue to make fun of them, making their emotions even more tender. there's a stereotype that ALL emos cut, or self-harm, but that's not always true.

It is short for Emotion.

It is from the Punk world that likes to live in the dark side of life. It once once supposed to be the emotional side of punk rock as they believed there was no emotion behind punk music BUT since the dark side got involved it is not a good thing to be into.

Girls and guys cut themselves and all sorts of really sadistic things. IT is a term now days really used or all those poor kids that are crying out for attention in a very dangerous way.

Stay away

Emo is a sort of genre of being. It is an existential state of abysmal sadness and despair, where one projects ones starry loneliness onto the outer rims of the nebulous world.

It's basically a style. A style in mind, and fashion.

EMO's are "depressed" "woas me"

or at least that's the stereotype.

the guy's dress like girls, and the girls let themselves go.

"it's cool to be strange.

They make out with the same sex, not because they're gay, but to be different.

honestly... I thinks it's strange. but to each his own.

if you were called "Emo" they probably were referring to the "depressed, suicidal" portion of the stereotype.
