And what do you call the hinged covered area to the front of the vehicle traditionally known as 'the hood' (I refer to such rear engined cars of 'yesteryear' i e Chevrolets 'Corvair' ; Volkswagons ; and Hillman Imps etc)

'Bonnet' covers the engine while 'boot', covers the storage area.

If I were to want access to the engine of a REAL Bug or a Porshe, I would lift the 'engine cover'.

Hood refers to the front of the car and the trunk to the rear space . So I expect when I was driving my old corvair, I always thought this way. Though I know that hood is supposed to be the engine cover and the trunk for the trunk space. But technically, the rear engine cover would be the hood.

The hood covers the engine and the trunk covers cargo space so the hood.

With my Karmann Ghia I call the front the trunk. The trunk is where you store stuff. In the back where the engine is - is my "deck lid". Maybe this is just VW terminology.
