It was the last year that remained the same when you turned it upside-down. The last such year before 1961 was 1881. The next one won't occur until 6009!
1961 = 37 X 53
1961 is 25 more than the closest smaller square 1936 = 44 X 44. It is 64 less than the closest larger square 2025 = 45 X 45, and 25 and 64 are also both squares!
