The one-day matches seem more profitable. So why on earth are tests played ? Also, does the ICC gain more money in tests ?

Test Matches are the first version of International cricket matches. The test matches really tests the talent of the players ublike ODI. There is still lot of interest left out in Test Cricket. That is the reason why the test matches are still being played.

Test matches are incredibly popular in England. They are far more meaningful - thats why they are called "Tests". You can't learn as much from one day matches and there isn't as much quality play.

In the sub continent one day matches are more popular and presumably more profitable.

I don't think the ICC gain as much as the national boards do - which is why India might play 3 Tests and 10 one day matches in a season when England could play 7 Tests and 5 one day matches.

I asked the same question from people who know cricket inside out and they say that you can see best cricket techniques in tests. I don't like tests though, find it boring. May be coz I am girl and I don't actually 'play' cricket (though I love to watch), so my perception of exciting cricket might be inaccurate. I Love ODIs. So exciting. Keeps me glued to the TV all day.

that's where cricket first started. there were not 50 over matches or even 20/20 back in the day.

Even as far back as when it started, games actually lasted the full FIVE days ... even if it took two weeks to get the full five days played
