Ofcourse we're letting him down but John Lennon spoke for many of us, so in a way, we're also letting down the millions of people who dream of living in a peaceful world. Honestly though, I dont think we will ever live in a fully peaceful world because people are just so used to having problems, when things are going okay, it worries us. The best you can do is "be the change you want to see in the world" and spread love and joy to the people you encounter.

Poet, artist and peace activist, yes. And very good at what he did too. However, he was sorely lacking in world affairs as most peace activist are. The only way this country has survived is because we understand that without a very active and strong military, our assses would be blown to dust already. Take your peace activist ideals and principles outside the US and start trying to convince others. A former President, Jimmy Carter tried very hard to do that and was quickly made a fool by war mongers in the middle east. And for all those who want to confront terrorism and war mongers with your idealistic views on peace. I say this,"You have an awful lot of learning to do". He stands there with a sword and you stand there with your bible and bs for peace. Which head do you think will roll first?

Don't get me wrong, I love John Lennon.
But in this one area, I don't find him particularly impressive.
Sure, he had a love in, and sang and spoke about peace.
But what did he physically DO to make the world more peaceful?
He cheated on a wife, left a child (I mean Julian, not Sean) to grow up who barely knew him, offended christians everywhere and started some minor riots with his words, and even advocated drug use at one point, which tends to encourage violence.
Again, I am a huge fan of John Lennon. But even he would have said he was just an artist with some cool ideas.
It's also worth noting that his original lyrics to "Revolution" were changed. His initial draft of the song supported violence. "But if you talk about destruction, don't you know that you can count me in" was the original. They made him change it, and that's why in most versions, you can hear him sing "out . . . in " (Peter Brown's book on the Beatles discusses this)
John certainly mellowed with age, but at the height of his stardom, he was at times hypocritical. I blame the drugs and his ego. Thankfully sobriety and fatherhood to Sean made him grow up.

Yes! We ARE letting him down! No one listens to The Beatles anymore...which is depressing. John Lennon had so many hopes for society, then he was killed and the whole world lost hope. I can't believe how ready the world is to give up on this. We need more activists in this world.

Because if you study the entire history of mankind you will see that humans make their peace by war. That has been the way it has always been. I think it sucks and sad considering the brain power we have but that is the way of the world unfortunately.

Because peace means many different things to many different people. It usually means that "you do what I want and we'll have peace. You don't do what I want and I won't give you peace. Not exactly peaceful.
