I walk around my school everyday and hear black peole-no meaning to be racist- call each other the 'n' word and i think it's just wrong. it makes no sense to do that when it was created as an insult. Then there's them calling us white people crackers. What is with people and racism?! It's just so appaling. The adults are actually encouraging their children to do so.

Yes I hear it too. We are all members of the human race, we bleed red. I think it is just a lack of education. I don't really think it is racism, its ignorance. I don't think trying to insult races will ever stop.

Keep smiling you will be a leader someday!

I know some people think that racism is born of ignorance, but I think the the basic motive of racism is fear - fear of someone getting ahead of us and taking something that we think we need, even though we can't define what it is we would lose. There is a sense that there is only so much of whatever and we need to limit the number of people who can have it.
When people call each other the "N" word or the "C" word or whatever, they are seeking to be the "cool" word, much like people use vulgarity. It is instructive to remember what the root of vulgarity is. Through study, I found out that certain symbols, such as the middle finger, have an ancient basis, and vulgaity can be found in many ancient cultures. The words we consider vulgar come from the middle ages and their origin was actually perfectly good Saxon words, but the Angles, who were the lords over the Saxons, considered the Saxons to be vulgar (commoners) and the Angle words and the Latin words were considered to be appropriate and higher class. Thus the Saxon words came to be known as vulgarity and crude and the Angle words appropriate. Knowing this does not make using vulgarity right, however, and some vulgarity is used like the spacers "uh" and "aaa".
So, I don't think the use of certain words necessarily denotes racism, but I think it can show a certain lack of sensitivity to the feelings of others who hear it and gives people a poor impression, but then the people who use those terms don't care what anyone else thinks.

As a parent i pride myself on teaching my children, respect for other people in ALL races.
I do believe that Racism is breed from ignorance, intolerance and no drive to want to understand where the other person is coming from.
I don't believe that Racism is acceptable in any way shape or form and i don't believe in using Races as the butts of peoples Jokes!
you are totally correct in saying that its appalling! unfortunately i don't think that it will ever completely diminish because while ever their is racism there is always something too 'fix'.
i wish you good luck in the rest of your schooling and i do hope that you are one day able to rise up and try too stamp out racism in every sense of the word.

good question, but i as a black person has used the "n" word towards my fellow african americans. it is not ignorance, most of us seem to have an understanding with each other that it is just fine to use that word toward each other. if someone to whom i am referring to as my "n" word has a problem with it, they can simply tell me that. i have never heard of an african american refer to a caucasion as a cracker, just in the same way that white people shouldn't refer to us as n's. i am not at all a racist person and i don't think that it should bother you what we are calling each other because it is not like we are calling you anything. it has absolutely nothing to do with you. you didn't say anything about when white people call us names. and i also don't appreciate the way you referred to blacks as "them". i'm not offended or anything, but wassup wit that?

A lot of people say that by using the n-word in a context that's not negative, they're taking the negativity out of the word and they're just turning it into a slang term. I don't like it either though. I'm multiracial, and I used to get called things like 'penguin'. Words like that do hurt. Not becaue I'm ashamed of who I am, but because it's ignorant. Unfortunately ignorance will always exist.

Used in that context it is a term of endearment. The term "racist" is overused to the point of being meaningless, and is but a reflection of the hypocrisy in our society.

Where a "Black History Month" is permissible if anyone campaigned to establish a "White History Month" he would be castigated as a racist.

To me the word racist is without any valid meaning, as is "anti-semitic" in the context in which it is normally, and incorrectly, used.

Sometimes people are mean because they have problems of their own and so they think being mean to people will make them feel better, or their just really mad and tend to judge

it is a lot of factors, the biggest one would be lack of culture, ignorance, and past grudges that should be left in the past (slavery), i would sure as hell be opposed to slavery if i lived back in the days and i am sure most of us would too, but colored folks are still living up to the grudge.
