Woodburn, Indiana (46797) is a very small town in northeastern Indiana where there's a controversy going on now over an article that appeared in the Woodlan (Jr/Sr High School) "Warrior". The article advocated tolerance towards homosexuality.
The issue is that the school's journalism advisor allowed the article to go to press without the consent of the school administration's top management. She (Amy Sorrell) now faces disciplinary action, and might even lose her job as a teacher because of this. It has attracted some national attention, and could very well end up in court.
If I were on the staff of a high school newspaper, I would write a story about this event, and its consequences. Are students being given the right to free expression? Is it fair to reprimand the teacher? Do school administrators have the right to censor such articles? What does the student body at Woodlan Jr/Sr High School think about this? Was the article all that controversial? I believe it could be an award-winning piece of high school journalism!
As former owner and publisher of the local community newspaper near Woodburn (and former employee of the company that publishes USA TODAY), I'd like to see this topic tackled by other school newspaper editors and student advisors across the country. If it's researched thoroughly, written well, and carefully presented, I think this could be an outstanding journalistic effort on the part of some enterprising young high school newspaper reporter. It's thought-provoking, serious, and worthwhile of consideration by students, teachers and parents alike.
I encourage you to go after this story! -RKO- 04/01/07
