A very common type of "pop up" is from CiD. If the pop ups have that written at the top, go to control panel, then add remove programs and remove it their. If not, Just check your settings, On the internet at the top, go to tools next to file and view etc, then pop up blocker and make sure thats turned on. If that dont work go to pop up blocker settings and make sure there is no websites in the "pop ups to allow" box. And if that doesn't work, Go to any search engine and find spyware, adware remover or just view any pop up blocking software to download.

The ugly truth is that you can not block all popups. Some popups will always slip by your protection. If you are using Internet Explorer, it comes with a decent popup blocker. If you are using IE 6, you might want to consider upgrading to IE 7, which offers better protection. Both the Google toolbar and Yahoo! toolbar include popup blockers; but, in my experience, Google's toolbar does a much better job than Yahoo's toolbar. You might want to check out the PopUp Test website (http://www.popuptest.com/). It is a cute website. Basically, the website will test how well your web browser block popups. It will test an array of different types of popups and tell you which ones managed to sneak past your blocker. In addition, the website also has a very uptodate list of both free and commercial popup blockers. FYI, you should also rule out the possibility that your computer might be infected with adware. I don't think that is the case because adware tend to be a bit more malicious than just creating popups but one can never be sure. People has already mentioned some excellent anti spyware programs. I recommend both Ad Aware and Spybot. If you are using Windows XP SP2, you can add Windows Defender as well. All 3 programs can be found at (http://www.filehippo.com/software/antispyware/).

Your PC may be infected with adware. Use these scans to remove it.

Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free.

Popup blockers, such as the Yahoo and Google toolbars, will only stop web based popup advertising. They can help somewhat but will do nothing to stop popups on a computer that is badly infected with trojan downloaders that are contacting other computers to download and deliver the pop up ads.

Try a full cleaning and dis-infection routine, if you are getting excessive popups, or are getting popups even when you are offline.

This is the one I use (it will take some time).

1. Scan for virus and remove (free online scan) with BitDefender
http://www.bitdefender.com/site/home/

2. Scan for trojans, adware and spyware and remove (free online scan) with Ewido
http://www.ewido.net/en/

--------------------------------------------------
And after your computer is fully cleaned of spyware I would suggest IE-SPYAD to prevent further problems, if you are using IE browser:

"IE-SPYAD adds a long list of sites and domains associated with known advertisers, marketers, and crapware pushers to the Restricted sites zone of Internet Explorer. Once you merge this list of sites and domains into the Registry, the web sites for these companies will not be able to use cookies, ActiveX controls, Java applets, or scripting to compromise your privacy or your PC while you surf the Net. Nor will they be able to use your browser to push unwanted pop-ups, cookies, or auto-installing programs on your PC."
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/resource.htm

------------------------------------------------------
And if your popups say "Messenger Service" at the top Title Bar. Read Here:

Older versions of Windows (pre XP-SP2) can get "Messenger Service" popups which are caused by Microsoft leaving the almost never used Messenger Service enabled by default. These type of popups will have the words "Messenger Service" up top in the title bar. This was corrected in Windows XP- Service Pack 2.

Understand that the Windows Messenger Service is completely different from, and not in any way related to, "MSN Messenger", "Windows Live Messenger" "yahoo Messenger", or any other well-known instant messaging system. Therefore, disabling the Windows Messenger service will have no effect upon your use of any other instant messaging applications. They will continue to work without trouble.

To disable this service in older versions of Windows use the free, Shoot The Messenger from:

Good luck.

If they only happen when you're online, they're because you use Internet Explorer; if they happen when you're not online you have wither adware or spyware on your pc. If thats the case switch off system restore, boot in safe mode and run your anti spyware.
Go to Start - programs - accessories - system tools - system restore.
Run your anti virus and anti spyware in Safe Mode. To get into Safe Mode repeatedly press the F8 key after the bios screen loads but before Windows loads. You'll know if you made it because the screen will be at 800 x 600 and your pc will be slow.

You need all these anti spyware programs;
http://www.ewido.net - AVG(Ewido) anti trojan.
http://www.safer-networking.org - Spybot Search and Destroy anti spyware. Use the Teatimer settings to protect Internet Explorer, and the Immuniser to stop malware getting on your pc.
Spywareblaster works with Internet Explorer and Firefox. It won't uninstall spyware that is already on your pc, but it will prevent hijacks and other malicious changes to your browser.
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com
Plus;
http://www.lavasoft.com - Ad-Aware SE Personal anti adware

And these are useful utilities;
http://www.mozilla.com/ - Firefox web browser.
https://addons.mozilla.org/search.php?q=ad+block&type=A&app=firefox - Adblock Plus
http://www.ccleaner.com - Cr*pcleaner Registry cleaner and privacy tool
Winpatrol is a handy utility that will manage your startup programs and cookies.
http://www.winpatrol.com
http://www.siteadvisor.com -MacAffee Site Advisor warns about malware on sites you are about to visit.

http://spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm - The Spyware Warrior site identifies fake anti spyware programs.

Install Spywareblaster, Firefox plus the Adblock plug in. Enable the pop up blocker at Tool-Options, and you won't see any more po-p ups.

Sounds like spyware and adaware have infected your computer. Best method of removal has to be 'Spyware Terminator'. It's much better than 'Spybot Search and Destroy'. www.spywareterminator.com is the link to download this super free program.

Also to prevent further infections i suggest downloading free McAfee SiteAdvisor which is a greatful tool to see if sites are safe to go on. http://www.siteadvisor.com

There may be reasons why you got infected too. Have you installed any new programs?... Bearshare can cause this.

most virus are spread through IE. IE is not a safe browser. you should use a more secure browser to protect your PC from virus.

i recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar. firefox can block any any popup and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE browser. as you know, most of virus spread throught internet and webpage.

besides, firefox is much smaller than IE, so it run faster than IE.

download firefox for free, Just have a try:

Download the following five programs:

1) CCleaner does an excellent job cleaning up temporary internet files, cookies, temp files, recycle bin, and prefetch folder.

2) If you don't have an antivirus program, EITHER AVG and Avast -- only install ONE.

3) Hitman Pro will let you automatically install, update, and run in Safe Mode many of the best free and free-to-try antispyware programs all with one click, including Spybot Search & Destroy, Lavasoft Ad-Aware SE, SpywareBlaster, Ewido, and free trials of Webroot Spysweeper and PCTools SpywareDoctor. The free version of Spybot Search & Destroy allows autoupdates, but Hitman Pro helps in keeping the others up to date with one click.

4) Winsockfix which is used to fix your internet connectivity if cleaning up malware breaks your internet connection.

5) Hijackthis which catalogs the places programs (both legitimate and malicious) are usually found, so that an expert can tell you if there's anything nasty remaining.

First, run CCleaner to clean out temporary files. In the Advanced section only check off "Old Prefetch data". Then click on Issues and scan for issues. Have it fix them all and make backups in case something gets erased that shouldn't (although I've never had problems with CCleaner's issue fixes). Then Scan for issues again until you get "No issues found". Then click on Tools and uninstall programs you don't want, and while in Tools click on Startup to remove things you don't want starting automatically. If you're unsure what you need to keep you can google for advice or email me with your questions.

Then update your antivirus program and then reboot into Safe Mode to run a full scan, then reboot after cleaning up what it found.

Then run Hitman Pro with the Safe Mode box checked. Reboot after cleaning up what it found.

Now run Hijackthis with the "Scan and Save Logfile" button, and email me the hijackthis.log, and I can advise you if there's any malware still there.

If your internet connection isn't working after removing malware, run Winsockfix.
