I power my laptop off every night, when I get ready to turn in... leaving any puter on constantly builds up the heat in the power supply and the fan thereof which is not something you want to do as this means that, even though you are not using the computer, you are using up what's known as mean time before failure, or mtbf, and thus, while the puter is running, and you're not using it, you're not getting your full money's worth out of your system..
However, if it's just during a break like you specified above, leave it on..

Hmm.. for me, I turned it off at the end of the day when I am about to go to bed or when I know I will be out and won't be needing it for a few hours. Most of the time, I'll try to maximize the use of my laptop. Only turning it on if i know, i'll be working on it for sometime and turning it off once I'm done. I won't turn on my laptop say just to check an email unless it is really necessary. Try pooling all or most of the tasks and then do them all at one time rather than keep on turning the laptop on and off. Bottom line is be smart!

if the laptop is not running of the battery then i say it doesn't matter to much - just put it in sleep mode when you are gone to help the enviroment and save you a couple pennies.

Definately leave it on, it's the volatge spikes during power on that kills lot of pc's.
I power mine off only once a week.
Standby is much better on your components

Close the lid this puts it into sleep mode and charges the battery, I admire efficiency.
