The '01 was the problem child, with major tranny issues. These were fixed in '02.

However, all the Raptor 660's can be fragile - we've seen more engine failures on this model than we usually do from Yamaha. Some weak points are the rod and the starter clutch. The starter clutch isn't a big deal, but rod failure pretty much wastes the entire engine.

Chassis-wise, the Raptor did still have some tie rod issues, and wasn't really super-stable at speed with a stock width setup.

I'm not saying I wouldn't purchase a used 660, I'd just be really really wary of anything that wasn't 100% perfect and tidy.

The water pump seals start to leak after a couple of rides (on the newer models).
Every year Raptors were made, they eat starter clutches. The quads have so much compression, the starter clutches have to work extra hard to engage the engine.
With a burned out starter clutch, when you press the start button, the engine won't turn. So you can't start it.

the worst thing i have heard and seen is the yami engin needs more scheduled valve adjustments than most other quads, you will notice it's time for an adjustment when it get's a little hard to start and it begins to stall now and again when you stop riding and yer just idling, my buddies all have had this problem and it goes away when the valves get adjusted, it's a reliable and fast quad, just do the maintiance.
