Well.... that is a good questions.
I can see the pro's, and con's to why most as you say "Army Wives" stay home.
Sometimes with the constant moves from state to state, it doesn't help your resume look really sturdy. Along with some families have young children, and the cost of daycare can be very expensive. And when that special soldier has to leave for deployments. The stress of family life really makes it crazy. It's like being a single parent with tons of stress.
(feel sorry for single parents)
Therefore I have seen some women juggle the life, and carry a job. I've done both.. not afraid of a working. Just hate seeing my family suffer, for being gone long hours, and they all have to live off of microwave meals. YUCK!
Good Luck!! Hope you find the answer your looking for. I've been a military wife now for 12 years.

why are you beaten on army wives? i am one, no i am not overweight, i am carrying an extra 10lbs than normal. but let me add i have a 3yr old, 18 mo old, and a 3 mo old baby, so i think that i am aloud. i do have a job now that my husband is not active duty, but when he was i did not. you try moving every 6 mo-1 yr and see how many people want to hire you, not only that but if you have the money to stay home, then why not? it cost me more in daycare then what i could have probably made. do you realize with 3 kids that is around 350-400 in daycare a week. i have a degree but what i do you would have to be there a while before making enough money to cover d.c., gas, and other expenses!!! so quit crying over other women and worry about yourself!!
after reading some of the answers i had to come back....
first off, if it wren't for men like my husband where would your pussy husband be? drafted! then it would be your sorry a** crying about missing your husband!!!!!
and also it is a proven fact kids are better off with a stay at home mom, you probably could not handle it, it is a very hard job to constantly be around your kids! they do wear on your nerves but only certain ppl can handle that!!! you would probably stay home if you could.
plus we do not consider it "living off my husband" we share our money, no matter if i am working or not it is still ours!!!
it is not like i don't earn it, i clean, cook, take care of kids, i know it is easier to have a job and let a babysitter take care of them i am doing it now!

Why are you labeling just Army wives? A lot of wives, military or not, choose to stay at home. Many wives work, but you're failing to see this. I worked part time when my husband was in the Marines and that was to allow myself to be home in time for my son to get home from school. And the weight does not apply to everyone. You don't have kids, do you?

Army wives need to work-out everyday and get a job. Don't let a man support you, support yourself. My father had a career in the army, but my mother had a job too in the army. Just because you have a husband in the army doesn't mean you have to stay at home all day. If you get too fat believe me he's going to leave you. I seen that happen to a lot of women nowdays

what a dumb question. Army wives are just women who need to get out of the slums they are in. What they do is get themselves pregnant by some poor naive army guy (very common) and get all the benefits, even if they are not married. If they do get a job the only thing they can do i go work in the PX or dinning facility because that is the only thing they can work as on base. Off base work suxs if you do not have an education which is the majority of army wives. I have been in the military for 10 years believe me you are a big duch bag.

Because it is not easy to find a good paying job with all the benefits when in three years you will most likely be relocated and need to start all over again. Child care takes a big chunk of change, kids get sick, and all the other expenses you need may not be worth a job.Cars, clothes, gas, what not verses staying at home.

Could be because most of them do stay at home!
I know some army wives who try to find work but because their husband gets posted to a different city every five minutes, people are reluctant to employ them.

There usually aren't a lot of good jobs around bases. Most military towns are chock full of strip joints and tattoo parlours.

They have to move around a lot, so it's hard to secure a good job. It's a hard life to live and a very tight knit community.
