I planted 75 hyacinth bulbs last year and only ONE has sprouted. I thought that the bulbs had been planted too far in the ground, so I dug up the area and the bulbs are gone! What happened?

A couple of possibilities:

1) Above-the-ground animals dug them up and ate them;
2) Underground rodents (gophers and the like) ate them;
3) They were not properly refrigerated before planting and they just rotted in the ground;
or
4) They were of poor quality - maybe dead when you bought them - and never had a chance.

Bulbs can be a challenge. There are many garden books and magazines dedicated to helping you get the best results for your particular area. Better to invest in one or more of them before spending more dollars on bulbs. That can get very expensive.

Squirrels or chipmunks. Next time you plant, place some lightweight screening over the bulbs till they appear. Good luck!

I've had a bad time with Tulips and squirrels, you may have the same problem.

Perhaps they rotted or squirrels dug them up. They are known for that.
