where can i find a list of chemicals or elements that will change the color of open flame that are safe?

usually salts of different metals are used to color flames. Copper salts will have a blue flame, strontium salts a red flame, etc.

You can go into any home goods / hardware store and buy the colored salts that are thrown in a fireplace for the color effect. They are all safe.

look at the properties under flame test for each element. Example Sodium (Na) will give yellow flame
