Is this out of respect for another culture, for their own safety, or because they must? Certainly in the case of the British sailor, it appears to be dictated by Iran. Would it be fair to require Muslim women visiting here to wear more Western garb, or at least not cover their faces?

In many countries it is dictated by the government. In others, it depends on the role of the woman. Most journalists wouldn't get interviews if they didn't adhere to the local customs. Some fear retaliation from ignorant extremists. Also, in this country people can wear anything they want, so I think one of the greatest things about America is that there are no specific guidelines about what you can't wear, only that you have to wear something.

Actually it should be a crime in a democratic country. We have to see thier faces when we need thier picture at the DMV ? That women lost the case, and other countries are making it illegal for women to wear sheets. Its disgusting, because the men are pigs and won't let them wear what they want. Not to mention them cutting thier clit-s so they won't get any sexual satisfaction to cheat on the abusive muslim man. Disgusting how religion brings back the hands of time.

A) Probably out of respect for customs of the particular country
B) To keep from being pummelled to death from some ignorant as*s fundamentalist who doesn't know Shiite from Shinola

In the states, women wear what they want...and in the case of Bjork and Roseann, that's not always the best idea.

it is wise to appear " modest " and wear at least a hijab when in muslim countries. They react violently to other cultures ways of dress.

In most islamic theocracies, they would be subject to arrest and/or deportation. In countries where it's not required, it's usually a matter of "cultural sensitivity."

To fit in, I guess. And out of respect.
I don't think it's fair to require any specific kind of dress, as long as you aren't running around naked.
