Mac!
there arent any programs on a windows you cant use on a Mac thanks to BootCamp or Parallels (a program that lets you run Windows XP... or Vista if you got the cash.... on your Mac! Cant do that with windows PCs)
Also, your in college! Its an experience, i agree with everyone else who answered that the business world uses Windows, so why not try the mac now while you can! By the way, dont worry about handing in projects on Microsoft Word / Powerpoint / Excel, because Apple sells a version of that (totally legally... its great!)
I cant even list all the better things about Mac's here but ill leave with this final and very important one: Apple makes everything in a Mac computer, and they have outstanding Tech Support. If something breaks on a Windows PC first you call Microsoft, and then the company that makes your hardware (i.e. Dell, HP, Toshiba etc etc) and finally some tech guy who tries to help.
On a Mac, you call Apple and they fix it.... they make and CAN FIX everything!!
As a college student i would reccomend Apple on this point alone, if you put that much $$ in, you cant waste time between assignments getting it fixed.
Finally, i would reccommend visiting your college's book store, they sell Apple computers at a discount there (Its called AppleEducation Discounts)
GOOD LUCK, get a Mac

windows, unless if your a music or graphic art major.
that is all macs are good for, recording music and doing video editing.
you should have no problems at a major college using a mac computer. the new mac computers are amazing!!! the new macs come with all sorts of digital multitrack audio recording software as well as DVD software, HD moving making, tons of neat stuff. But will u use that in the real world? Macs are a toy!
but the whole world uses windows based PC. Go with an Windows XP based machine until Vista's issues are all ironed out. Although the Vista OS with a dual core 2 CPU setup probably could blow away any mac by looks and speed.

6 of one, half-dozen of the other, however, in my experience at a large university (20,000 students) I found Windows to be predominant. I now work in a hospital which is one of a group of 7 - we all have Windows and Office.
Your decision.

Windows for sure!!
Macs are cool looking and all, but MS products are more practical.

Choose the OS you are most comfortable with. In college you may not want to be bothered with learning anything *else* new.
If you are not "comfortable" with anything, consider starting off with Linux.
(Ubuntu is a fairly popular and friendly distribution.)
