This was asked a last week by another. Repost of my answer;

Lean manufacturing is the principle where work in progress on a factory floor is minimized, to reduce costs associated with having parts tied up in production.

Usually, "ON TIME" shipping. When an order is received, it does not become warehoused, to sit and wait for shipment date. This type of production practices of being lean requires workforce reduction, and products that are not usually made until time for shipment. Cuts back on warehousing, especially when orders are regularly canceled.
