to keep you happy while they get what they want

Because they think that is what you want to hear, so they say it to get what they want...which is usually sex, if you are female, and the other party is male.

Occasionally, the person just has no concept of what love is, so says the words, because he feels that is what people in a relationship are supposed to do, and he is trying to fit the role as best as he can from the examples he has seen in the media.

But normally, a guy will know that he does not really love you, he just loves what you can do for him; be it sexual gratification, status symbol, alleviate loneliness, have a reliable date--with out the fear of rejection each time he asks someone out--or, it may just build up his self-esteem, to know that he can keep a gf around, and not get dumped.

So, if he is not going to be honest about how he feels about you, dump him, before he hurts you worse.

There are people out there that say they love you but they don't know what the word love means. Men/women will tell each other they love one another, but they don't necessary do. It's just a word that they say. The word LOVE has not been used like it was back in the 60's and 70's.

Some people think that lust is love. What people are really saying ( if they don't know you well) is that they are in lust with you! They have all those happy, butterfly feelings and confuse it with love. Many guys will say anything to get what they want from you too, but some are just confused by all of the feelings!

When you young the main reason most men would say this to you is simple they want in your pant's and figure this may pave the way. But then when you get older the feelings become more real and honest. The only way you know if it stands true is if the person sticks around even when there not getting any action.

my step-daughter and I have trouble seeing eye to eye. she is only 15... and she makes it very clear that she THINKS that if i wasn't in the picture her parents could get back together (even though they divorced 8 years ago and I only met him about 5 years ago).

I was raised to not say things I don't mean... EVER! but this child tells her father and I that she loves us every night before bed.... AND I KNOW BY HER TONE she doesn't mean it when she says it... she's just trying to make things look good to Dad. Then of course I LOOK LIKE THE BAD GUY if I don't say it back... grrrrr... I hate being an adult sometimes!

I tell people i love them all the time but its like a brotherly love . You have to kind of read between the lines . People have all kids of meanings for love. You just have to find the kind of love your looking for.

It depends...there's what I like to call the BIG THREE reasons: 1) Most guys are asswholes and say "I love you" so they can get intimate with you emotionally in order to get INTIMATE WITH YOU PHYSICALLY (AKA Get you into bed); 2) Most people say it IN RESPONSE to their partner's "I love you" because if they don't...it'll create an awkward moment and they'll feel that they've hurt the other person and this may strain the relationship; 3) People, especially young people, tend to CONFUSE INFATUATION/CRUSH WITH BEING IN LOVE...so they say it. Hope that helps.

People are immature and scared. Sounds strange? You say things that you sometimes don't mean because you're scared of the end result of your NOT saying it, right?

1) They don't know what love is;
2) They expect something in exchange for their [false] confession;
3) They just want to tell you what you seem to want to hear;
4) They love what you do for them, not you yourself, and are just confused about all this.
