The general category of polyacrylonitirile are very useful polymers. Think of all the transparent plastic that we use. An example wouold be Lucite windows (that's a DuPont trademark for these compounds).

There are also superabsorbent polymers based on polyacrylonitirile. These polymers are used where there is a strong need to absorb moisture quickly. Paper diapers and sanitary napkins would be such examples. They are also used to retain moisture for plants.

There are no risks in the use of these items. There is a risk in the manufacture of the polymers as they involve toxic chemicals. Possibly that could happen if these polymers are burned as well.
