I am a dancer, and have found myself in a lot of stress at school, and in a musical I was performing in... I also do not eat fatty foods. I try to limit my fat intake each day as much as I can. My mother is convinced that the reason I have missed my period for 3 months (about) is because I do not eat enough fat. I eat TONS of fruit and vegatables, so I do not see the problem. I am still getting discharge. Should I be worried?

Dear Confused,
You should be seen by a gynecologist or a nurse practitioner who specializes in womens health. Your period is related to the amount of hormones you have, and women store them in fat tissue. That's why girls who are anorexic and have no fat on their bodies do not get periods. Fats in food are necessary for certain body functions and for metabolism. As a nurse, it's good to hear that you eat a lot of fruit and vegetables. I always tell my patients to do that. You are on the right track with that, but be sure you eat other essentials as well. Whole grains, complex carbohydrates, protein and "good fats" such as you can find in fish like salmon, vegetables like avocados, and sunflower seeds are a part of the nutrition you must have at your age to build healthy tissue and bones for a healthy adulthood. If you do not have enough fat to give you the proper amount of Omega 3, 6 and 9, your health may suffer. If you do not store enough fat on your body to keep your hormonal balance, you will lose more than just your period. Please speak to a doctor or nurse practitioner you can trust. They may suggest you work out a healthy dietary plan with a nutritionist. Insurance will pay for a nutritional consult. Have your mother make an appointment so you can discuss this. It's really important.

The stress alone can cause your period to be late, but you also need a certain amount of fat in your diet. If you have lost a lot of weight that my be the reason why you haven't gotten your period in over 3 months. Also, lack of proper nutrition. I suggest asking your doctor.

Starving yourself will cause your periods to stop. And that's what you say you are doing. Starving. Fruit and vegetables are not enough to live on. You need lean protein and whole grains, too and you don't mention eating them?

Specifically cholesterol is necessary for you to produce sexual horomones (it is a precurser). Sooo... I guess getting enough cholesterol in your diet would be beneficial. I would also be worried because technically this can effect your sexual development.
