My cocker spaniel had some matted fur on his belly. After his bath, when I was combing through his tangles, I got some little scissors to cut the matt out and took off the top layer of skin. It bled a little, but quit. He seems to be fine now, but I feel horrible about it and want to know if there's anything more I can do for him? Should I put neosporin on it? It's on his belly area, so I don't think a bandage would stick.

Yes, you can put Neosporin on it to help prevent infection if it is an abration. If possible, you may want to trim any surrounding hair, so that it cannot get into the wound.

Don't put anything on it- he'll probably just lick it off and it will make him sick. If it's not bleeding anymore and it's not deep, don't worry about it he will be fine. Don't waste $150 on a trip to the vet unless he really needs it.

If there are still more matts on him and you have a set of clippers (like that they use in a barber shop or on horses) those work really well. You will be able to remove all of the matts and you won't cut him. To avoid serious clipper marks, you may want a helping hand. Take the matted fur and pull it straight up, away from the body. You can have your helper hold the unmatted hair away from the spot you are going to clip- get as close to the skin as possible to remove the whole thing.

Good luck.

I have also done this once or twice, since I groom my shih-tzu myself. Try to remove the hair from the surrounding area. Cleanse it with an antiseptic, like peroxide, and yes, apply neosporin. Dogs heal surprisingly fast. Just try to kepp the wound clean. Cleanse it with the peroxide several times a day if possible. It's best to let it air out....it dries up quicker. If you are concerned with him bleeding on carpet, or furniture, just put down some old sheets for protection. The coolness of the sheets will feel good to your dog. Next time, tho when trying to cut off a mat, cut about a half inch above the skin. Usually you can brush the rest out, then. :)

I would take him to the vet and have them give you something to put on it.It may become infected if you don't.Its very hard to remove matts from a cat or dog for this reason. As the fur matts, it twists the skin and that's how you end up cutting them. The only way to remove the matts is to have him shaved.
Its impossible to brush them when they get that matted. Please don't beat yourself up, you were only to to help him! Next time you will know not to cut the matts.

P.S. Be careful what you put on his skin over the counter.Dogs will lick off anything you put on and some over the counter creams for people will make dogs sick!!!

Don't worry about it, it's good that you wanted to cut the mats out. But you should always feel around to find where the skin is and where the mat is.

Clean it with rubbing alcohol several times a day, especially after going outside. He may not like it, but it can greatly reduce the chance of infection.

No do not use any cream on your dog since it is a open sore or a bandage the best thing that will be good for him is a vet...Although they don't charge you if you call them on the phone and ask what's wrong...Just be by his side and give him care I think he's going to be just fine=)

It should be okay if just a small nick. Put a little savlon or germolene on it and keep the area as clean and dry as possible until it heals. Try not to feel too bad,was a genuine mistake. Hope his sore bit gets better soon.x

Yes put neosporin on it and watch it, so it doesn't become infected. I would also call your vet in the morning and tell them what happened. Chances are they would want to see him to make sure the wound is okay. In the meantime give him lots of love and apology treats.

Neosporin is good, but there's another medication I prefer. It's called "Lanabiotic" which is a triple antibiotic combined with a mild anisthetic. You can buy it at most drug stores; it's a cream, also. Then wrap loosely so he doesn't lick it off.

You can wash it, put neosporin on it and then wrap a clean soft cloth loosely around his belly.
