It's a slang term usually applied to a woman who is lesbian and more masculine than most women. It's usually meant as an insult, and is mainly used either by men who are offended by the idea of a woman getting someone that they can't, or by homophobic females.

They are not necessarily unattractive, they look more like a man than like a woman though, so to a man they might appear unattractive.

A dyke is the masculine version of a lesbian, the "male" partner in a lesbian couple. Also known as a "bull dyke"

Although it has connotations of referring to lesbian women who are more masculine, it doesn't explicitly refer to them, as I hear many feminine women self-referentially using the term towards themselves.

It originated as a negative term for lesbians, particuarly lesbians who, by their dress and behavior, could be identified as such.

Time has gone by, and now it has been reclaimed as a positive term to be used in-group for lesbians, and many people proudly proclaim themselves to be dykes, or lovingly call one another by the term, meaning no offense whatsoever, but pride and identity.

Hope that helps.

P.S.- lesbians, even the masculine ones, are quite attractive to some people. Otherwise, how do you figure they get dates? I myself break out in a flush over a manly butch lesbian.

MOST OF THOSE ANSWERS WAS WRONG. A DYKE IS NOT THE MALE ROLE OF A LESBIAN RELATIONSHIP. A DKYE IS ANOTHER WORD FOR LESBIAN. IT'S RATHER INSULTING LIKE CALLING A LESBIAN LESBO BUT I CALL MY FEM SISTER A DYKE ALL THE TIME- JOKING OF COURSE.

It's kind of like a levee... it holds water back to keep floods from occuring. Or tries to, anyway.
