There are over 300 species of Cichlid, you need to specify which one you have got, and answers would vary a lot based on that factor.

In general most Cichlid parents usually take care of their babies. I spent hours watching my first pair "herd" the babies around the bottom of the tank looking for food. The dad seemed the best provider - when I fed the parents cichlid sticks, he'd chew a few up and spit them out for the babies to eat. If one of the parents neglects their duties for the fry, the other one will get upset - this is probably what happened to yours. I've never had trouble with them until the fry were almost the size of the parents - about 1 1/4 inch - but you have to give them room so they aren't overcrowded or they will become aggressive with each other.

Cichlids don't have live young, they lay eggs. Also, it takes a male and a female being together and spawning together to have fertilized eggs. Some are mouth brooders, some are not. Generally cichlids make good parents and defend the eggs and the babies against other fish. More information on your specific fish would help us give you more complete answers.

Mine laid eggs and the fry were born in about 4 days. Dad and mom fought over them and then they were gone one day. All in a week.

I have chiclids too, they are mouth-breeders. They lay eggs and then the mother keeps the eggs in her mouth until they hatch. She doesn't eat that entire time, I suggest you maybe put her in a separate tank because once the babies hatch, they'll stay near their mother but eventually they will go away from her and they may be eaten by other chiclids in the tank. Hope that helps. :)
