plus you might just want to invest in a good pencil that doesn't need to be sharpened very often or even go as far as an erasable pen

Simple: They only THINK they take advantage of me.
Actually I am presently unaware of anyone taking advantage of me. When I do feel it happening, I tackle it head on and do what needs to be done to correct the situation.

I get the feeling though, that you feel people are being taken advantage of and, obviously don't know it. And they can't tell you otherwise. I hope I'm wrong.

Try to do the right thing.
An education can never be taken away from you.
Take what you want, but eat what you take.
Don't look for a fight, but if the need arises..... Fight to win.

While I'll be the first to say my "moral compass" does not always face exactly north..... I try keep going in that general direction.
