Below are two links; one for a digital recording board and one for a microphone.

Depending on what you plan on recording, other items might be needed, but with a recording console and a mic, you can get pretty far. You can burn the CDs on your computer.

You can buy home recording equipment from online music shops. Some software is inexpensive while others cost like 500 bucks. Any kind of music production center like an Akai MPC (what hip hoppers use) is going to cost 500 bucks and up to a couple of thousand. They also have mini recording workstations that cost like 1,000 bucks and up that let you record tracks and burn to disk all in one like mini portable studio.

Tascam DPFX01 recorder is about 350.
Shure SM57 mic's are about 50 each I think.
Then it depends on what instruments you have or want.
