It is a red flower with long stems...many call it an indian paitbrush or an indian cup.

Indian paiint bruhes can also be orange or yellow. They do make colors on rocks for drawing.

This site says the tops look like they've been dipped in red paint. Add that to the fact that this plant grows in the western United States which is associated with "Indians", and you have a name.

I live in the Tahoe California area and in summer they are abundant. they are a firey red colour and look like a upside down paint brush. So I think it is its appearance.
