You should first make sure you know exactly what you are using. Carpet shampoos contain perchlorethylene which is an extremely hazardous chemical which is a known cancer causing agent. It damages the liver, kidneys and nervous system. The answer is to find a product which does not contain such chemicals.
Melaleuca has several products which are a much better substitute. Pre-Spot for the obvious, and MelaMagic for the carpet cleaner.

Do NOT use the soap in the tank. It is best to spray it on with a pump sprayer and extract with water. The cleaners for "do-it-yourself" carpet cleaners leave a residue that cleans soil off your shoes, holds the dirt in making vacuuming less effective and wears the fibers out.
Ideally you should use a "fiber rinse" in the tank to remove all residues from the carpet. check out www.jondon.com for a professional grade product. THEY ARE LESS EXPENSIVE AND FAR MORE EFFECTIVE
