Panty = broad term for women's undergarment but people usually think of a more conservative/concealing garment
i.e. granny panty, women's brief - pulled up to waist w/ low cut legs
But panty can mean bikini bottoms, sports brief w/ high cut legs and elastic at the hips, lacy panties etc.
Thong = specific type of panty; minimal fabric w/ cheeks exposed

Yes. Panties will cover more of your skin in the back area, a thong covers only the front.
Thongs are intended to be worn with clothes that are more tight or sheer to prevent the dreaded "panty line" from being visable under certain types of clothing material.

Yes it is! A thong is made so that you can't see the underwear line and a panty is pretty much just like an underwear but more sexier :)
Try them out, it's a major difference when you wear them.
