On my other question, I asked Atheists about Science being so Cruel.

So anyway, if we threw out Religion...
Will we remain civilized?

We suppose to ignore Jesus's teaching and not forgive
people. And not love our enemies. We can steal
and it is okay to cheat and we don't have to get married.
And stuff.... we should all live like animals...

Since there is no Hell.... we can do whatever we want
to survive.. I can tell the Homeless people, hey, there
is no God, you can go on and steal just like animals use
their instinct to steal other animals food and do whatever
they can do to SURVIVE!!!!

And we shouldn't have to punish anyone....
We don't have to what Moses did, when he set up lawyers,
Judges, Laws, and stuff.

We should all live WILD and do whatever we want to.

Huh?

Heck, why should we follow the Law? Not fair other people
can succeed and we can't.

You must be a real believer, can't you see that these things, these virtues, would still exist even if there weren't a religion framing them as "the right thing". Of course we would be civilized without religion. There are civilized atheists aren't there? I think that you're looking at religion through a very small window. Religion isn't always Christianity or another major world religion. Religion can be anything that anyone believes. I haven't decided if there's a god or not. I haven't decided what I believe. But right now I'm swaying toward being an atheist or maybe a Hindu or Buddhist. But throughout this experience of finding what I believe I'm finding it easiest to believe in myself and to get my own opinions which happen to be civilized. My parents never raised me to worship anything and I'm more civilized than some of the Christians that I know. Religion is just what people hold on to when everything else they've known has fallen. It's because it can't be proved, they know it can never let them down. They're good people because they choose to be.

Your question supposes that people act in certain ways only because of the potential consequences, or lack of them.

This is a rather pessimistic view of humanity.

While at some level, survival dictates that we act in our own best interest, many (if not most) people are capable of doing things for others for no other reason than that it is the right thing to do; not because they hope to gain something from it.

Ethics and morality can be, and often are, completely divorced from religion.

Also, the "Golden Rule" need not have a religious connotation.

So, the answer to your question is, no. The lack of religion will not cause us to live like animals. In fact, I could make an argument that without religion the world would be a much more civilized and safer place to live. Too many people have died, are dying, and will die in the name of religion.

Good Luck!

;o)

Without religion we would live the law of the strongest.
The strong would commit any number of atrocities and the weak would have no recourse. Exactly like the Mongol hordes who overran half the known world killing and pillaging everything on their way and the unprepared populaces were powerless to stop them.
The person above who referred to Buddhists and Hindus as non religious forgets that both Buddhists and Hindus believe the manner of their next rebirth will be decided upon their behaviour and conduct in this one.
Besides humans would revert to superstition like belief in the evil eye. Anyone with a birth defect would be left to the elements, like the ancient Greeks practiced.

I don't believe a person has to be religious to have a desire to live a good life and have morals. The threat of hell shouldn't be what determines a person' s actions. If that is the only reason people are good, their goodness is not genuine and God would not reward that anyway, I wouldn't think. In fact, a lot of people and groups use religion to do the most heinous acts of all. Some people who are not religious have very good morals and are better people than some religious people.

I totally agree with you!! I have never realized how many atheist's were out there until I got on Y/A!! And thier not just Athiest's , some of them are just so "Full of the Devil" you almost can get creaped out about thier ways of thinking and how rude thier answer's are, and just how they live, by their answer's.....Its so sad, that they think they were born just to die!!! But as far, as your question goes, about us having to resort to "Animalism"......I feel if the whole New World Order kicks in, we are going to have to learn all about our animal instincts to survive, that will be for sure!! And dodge those camera's that can see through houses, and we'd actually have to just about dress-up in animal clothing so that they dont force us to take the NWO, sign, and be able to blend in with the bears, you know!!! I think the NWO, sign will actually be the sign of the "Beast" in disguise!! Because if this does take place, America will surely become something none of us are used too!! It will be a whole nother way of LIFE!!! Scary thought!! And their will be "Armored men" everywhere keeping "Order", and you wont be able to shop or do anything without their permission, and it will be just like another Russia, or Auschwitz!!! Scary thoughts, and I certainly hope Jesus comes before this ever happens!!! Good Point, I know where your coming from and what your point definately is!!! Lets just hope some of these other people understand where your coming from, too!! And that they wont be "Rude" as usual, you know.....Or they'll sometimes "Joke" questions such as this "completely off" because their in "Denial!!" I understood what you meant completely, and I agree 100%!!!!

I'm good for the sake of being good, i don't need the bribe of heaven or threat of hell to be good. We atheists are nothing like what the church leaders are fond of charicaturing us as.

We are freethinking individuals who are able to see the Big Picture without the blinders of religion. We do not live in despair, quite the contrary; freethought is incredibly refreshing, liberating, and empowering. We are not nihilists, but lovers of life who see it as all the more precious because there's no eternal afterlife.

Through science and reason, we know more about the true nature of the world we live in than your religion could ever hope to offer.

We are not the enemy of christians and other theists. Our quarrel is with irrationality, wishful thinking, superstitions, intellectual dishonesty, and all other forms of thinking that keep mankind mired in darkness, ignorance and hate.

We must remember that the concept of religion was conceived by humans. Therefore, I think it is safe to assume that we have an innate sense of morality, which distinguishes us from most other animals. There is evidence to support this. If religion were necessary for people to act morally, every atheist on the planet would be immoral. China would be in disarray! This, of course is simply not true. There has been no study that I know of that has indicated a relationship between lack of religion and level of immoral behaviour, unless one’s definition of immoral behaviour includes religion-specific acts such as homosexual activity, rather than generally acknowledged ones such as theft. Therefore, I do not think that religion is the primary cause of morality in society.

I do think that the need many people feel for religion is very strong. However, we should realise that all major religions attempt the same goal. They attempt to provide a coherent belief system that goes beyond what morals are innate, and promotes greater morals in hopes of promoting a more ethical society. In other words, they attempt to propel civilisation further from its animal roots, towards something greater. However, in practise, religion has not been entirely successful. Many atheists point out the fact that religion is one of the major causes of conflict in the world. Again, I think this speaks to our innate sense of morals. Those without religion, in this case, are concerned for their fellow human beings, and perhaps choose to be atheist because it may lead to a more ethical (and more peaceful) society.

So, in short, my answer is no. Because of our innate sense of morality, we would not, without religion, live like most other animals.

Take away religion and you still have natural law, and conscience, and "right" and "wrong" things.

Take away religion, and we still have a society that wants order, and to advance as human, not animals.

Take away religion and all you've done is taken away traditions of many people.

Laws are there for a reason. If we had none someone could break into your house right now, shoot you in the head, steal your computer and live happily ever after.

I do not really understand your question.

I honestly do not think religion has anything to do with civilization. Religion is about beliefs, spirituality and conceptions. Civilization is about order and conduct.
I am baptist but I do not participate in any church activities or practice baptism. But still I display discipline, morals, values and integrity. I whole heartily believe in GOD and our lord and savior JESUS CHRIST. I just do not go to church. I personally think church has become to overrated and superficial. It is all about the give. What about saving souls and preaching the word?

But any way....religion does not dictate civilization. Religion just alters your beliefs towards a certain criteria. Religion is good. It promotes ideas. Just do not get hung up on beliefs. Morals and values will build communities and develop strong children.

Remember that!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Religion is a from or kind a tool to control governments and population's. In its actually context it is very good thing. because without it it will be disaster after another. Religion is another kind of LAW which deals with spirits, souls and emotion's. We all humans need it. Due too free Will that Almighty has given to us, we have to have something in order to put things in order, as far as our souls and spirits goes. Now their are people that will take everything out of Religion and could misuse or abuse it for their own pleasures. In conclusions with out it we will turn to animals even I could say worst than animals remember we do have free will. So, it is up to each individual how to pro form his or her life.
