If the goldfish has been taken care of properly, they can live up to 50 years! Although, this isin't as amazing as some parrots like for over 200 years! I've gotten lucky with little common goldfish won from the carnival living up to 3 years, not to shabby from living in a bag for a while! Although, with my proper care I have managed to keep goldfish alive and healthy for about 20 years!

It was nine years for me, combined life in a pond and then a 110 gallon tank. Then I shut the tank down for goldfish to convert over to tropicals and gave them to a friend of my wife at her job. Three are still alive (1 Black Moor, One Comet, One Shubunkin - my favorite all time goldfish), now going into 14th year this month. :)

I knew someone who had a 13 year old goldfish, but I suspect that was some kind of freak! Mine was 2 when he died.

I have 6 all over 12. 14 over 9. One however I have no idea how old she is. She was given to me more than 10 years ago by the local police when they entered a house that was over ridden with various animals.
(A few Koi that are more than 20) All pond fish by the way

19 years, and he was won at a carnival! He was always in a small, round, unfiltered tank. He also used to jump out alot, and we would find him on the carpet!
He was called Copper by the way - lol

my kids won a fish at a fair and i thought it would die ...it did....17 years later!!!!
it was big when they got it so i think it was a few years old then and i woke one morning to find it floating my son saved it by giving it the kiss of life .....that was 10 years before it met its final demise .....
it was always kept in a goldfish bowl in the kitchen window which in summer had direct sunlight ...it never had any fancy accommodation ...filters....or lighting ....the bowl was always filled from the tap with none of these fancy preparations and it was a lot less hassle than my tropicals and my fantails .
we named it jaws because the kids brought "friends" for it but he would kill and eat them within few days !!

I personally kept one for 6 years before giving it to a friend that had it another 9 years before he moved. I don't know how long it lived after that. Plenty of gold fish have been documented at over 50 years, so they can live a long time.
