I think the Mayan calendar is awesome and I've written several books on it.
The calendar doesn't end, the world isn't ending, and anyway the significant date is 12-21-2012, not 12-23-2012, the first day of Baktun 13. This starts a new 396-year cycle, but it's not the end/beginning of the calendar.
ps The Mayan people didn't "go extinct" as someone above me claimed. There are still millions of them alive in Mexico & Guatemala. The people left their cities; they didn't all die out.

Well, mayan calendar is accurate. However, this speculation could be due to their strong hold to their religion at that time.

Why no believe in Bible? It is the most widely published book and can be read by 90% of the world's population. Note that the remaining 10% could include illiterates.

I think it is quite possible. Of course it is equally possible that it will end on dec 22 2012 or any other day. I see no reason to give this date special significance.

I think is one of the most accurate calenders that we have, this people were of an exceptional intelligence, if you look into their sources, as well as their political system, economical management, and military strategy, their whole government was something beyond their time, but as for the exact and precise time, I believe that because their calender is somewhat different then the calender we now use, there may be a bit of difference on the exact date and time, I do believe they are closer in their prediction then most other peoples.

I didn't buy bottled water and spam because of Y2K. I think about this notion is about as stupid as that one was. Remember, the Bible states (paraphrased) that no one shall know when the end of the world is. There is nothing scientifically significant about that date either. People want to be superstitious and you can only have pity on them.

Rubbish - the Mayans weren't able to predict when they were going extinct so why should they be any more clever about this?

If they were so smart they should have predicted that the Spanish would wipe them out. They are not even around anymore, if they could predict the future why did their culture get destroyed, you should think that they could have planned ahead better if they can predict the future.
