Sure, if the laptop has a USB port, simply purchase a USB ethernet card.

If you are running win95 or NT then you won;t be able to use USB... they don;t understand the USB interface well enough. Win98 SE introduced USB but even that was pretty bad. NT will just about understand USB if you can find drivers, but it doesn't cope with hot swap.
So go with a PCMCIA ethernet card... 10MHz or 100MHz (doesn't matter which as they are both faster than internet speeds unless you've bought a really big internet pipe).
Or go with a PCMCIA wireless card if you've got a wireless router BUT make sure you've got one that supports Win95 or WinNT.
(I hope it was really cheap... because my old laptop is worth less than $100/£50 and has ethernet and USB built in and runs win2000!

You can usually get a PCMCIA expansion card (one of the small 1/4" tall cards that plug directly into the available slots usually on the side of the machine.) If you have a wireless router available, then you can get a wireless notebook card that will allow you to connect that way, or you can also find PCMCIA cards that have an ethernet conversion built into them, so one of the card plugs into the laptop, and the other end will have an open ethernet port, which acts just like a built-in port.

You could also use a PCMIA card that supplies an Ethernet port.

You have multiple choices:
pcmcia adapter
usb adapter (get one with a short cord so it doesn't break!)
get a wireless router and use the wireless in the laptop
