Think of today's Divas if you are going to sing somewhere: Christina Aguleria, Mariah Carey and Shakira.
If you just like the older stuff there is always Donna Summers, Whitney Houston and Celine Dion.
I love the song: How will I know, I will always love you and Power of Love.
I'd love to hear those on American Idol, Think about those power house songs.

Rather than Piece of my Heart by Janis Joplin, try Ball and Chain...
but you can't beat Down So Low by Tracy Nelson. one of the best female vocalists EVER, sadly not widely known. Esquire magazine once called Down So Low, "the saddest song ever written". It has been recorded by Linda Ronstadt, Etta James and Maria Muldaur (among others). I couldn't find a good sample of it online -you really need to hear it from the beginning-it starts slow and builds. Sample lyrics:
since you went away, I cried for so long
I wanted you to stay, but that was all wrong
the pain you left behind has become part of me
and it's burned out a hole, where my love used to be
the chorus is:
But it's not losing you, that's got me down so low
I just can't find another man to take your place
At the end of the very last chorus she says: I just can't find another man to take your place...there's no one can...
Powerful stuff...
