I need to do a 10 page history paper on something relating to human rights. I need a topic that is easy to write about and somewhat interesting. So far I have thought of the Rwandan Genocide, The Argentinian Dirty War, the ugandan genocide, the Holocaust....

Even though I think the Holocaust is by far the worst historic violation of human rights, you might want to focus on one of the others. Assuming this is a recurring assignment for your course, your instructor has probably seen dozens of assignments on the Holocaust already, and as a college writing tutor, I can guarantee you that cliche subjects regularly get lower grades than what they deserve. The Rwanda massacre may be a good topic to pursue, because I know a lot of information has become mainstream on it since the release of the film Hotel Rwanda, and it's still quite a timely issue. A word of warning though, that if you do choose this idea, then I wouldn't reccommend relying too heavily on the recent movie. I've seen it myself, and while it was a great film, I've also heard a lot of talk that it was more 'loosely based' on one incident, and left out a few of the political details. All the same though, that's got my vote for a significant issue that still has a lot of interest and appeal for a broad audience, which you should always consider when choosing an essay topic.

Good luck!

The Atlantic slave trade involved the most people and went on the longest, It also resulted in damage to the societies of both the perpetrators and the victims which still persist today. The race conscious and the theory of white supremacy that has so plagued the world developed as a justification for Europeans to engage in an activity that was profitable but they knew to be immoral. The American civil war was a direct result. Hitlers rise to power and the Holocaust had its foundation in the attitudes formed in the period of the slave trade. Imagine how different the world would be if they had hired the needed labor.

How about colonization? It caused all the problems we see in the Third World countries, with its impact lasting even till present time. It's grasp was very far-reaching, spanning over different continents and many countries. And these countries had their resources depleted, the people exploited and on top of that, they are forced to follow an alien political system and ideologies. This is done at the expense of their culture as the colonizers led them to believe that anything that is contrary to their believes would be "barbaric". So, for the sake of variety, you might want to consider classifying "colonization" under a violation of human rights because I doubt people will look at it very often.

Sometimes human suffering is at its most tragic when it is dragged on for so long, with no one to notice them or remember why they ended up that way in the first place.

You really want to impress your teacher, do a paper about the "Burning Times", and the Catholic Churches persecution of accused witches from as early as the 1000's right up to the Salem Witchcraft Hysteria of 1692.

Slavery jumps to mind.
If you want to stir up a hornet's nest, you could discuss the bombing of Japanese civilians with a nuclear weapon at Hiroshima and Nagasaki to end world war 2.

the list goes on and on...the genocide of native american peoples and the subsequent taking of their lands whether by the spanish or english; african slavery to jim crow in the u.s.; armenian genocide; pol pot and the cambodian communist party; pinoche's regime; teh sudan today, on and on and on. they all are interesting when you get down to telling the human stories related to them, and all have much info on them, especially the holocaust, native genocide/land depossession, and african slavery. good luck!
