Good question. I try and stay optimistic but it will take a lot for that to happen. I see us doing good things there but I don't see the three dominant sects ever becoming chummy with each other. Just being tolerant would be a great step forward.

The Middle East has a society of a sort, it's just not our society, and we find it threatening.
Yes, the wars between Islamic doctrines in unfortunate, but the exact same thing happened to Christianity during the Protestant Reformation. Protestants and Catholics fought in endless wars just for the sake of religion, but they were lucky. There was a place for some of them to go (America) and their methods of killing each other weren't nearly as technologically advanced.
So the depressing but most realistic route to peace in the Middle East? Wait, it will blow over just like it did in Europe. However, as a civilized, humanitarian society, we will never accept this (nor should we)

You have to remember that Iraq is an infant democracy.
When an infant starts becoming aware of his surroundings, he tries to manipulate what he can see, hear, and touch. Babies cry out for attention, have temper tantrums, and in doing so figure out what works and what produces no results.
The Iraqi insurgents are like these infants. When they don't get their way, they lash out by blowing up each other's mosque.
This is why our troop presence is so vital. We are like the parent who is telling the small child, "You WILL take a bath before bedtime, and you WILL clean your room in the morning, and I don't want to hear any backtalk."
It's going to take a while. Many of the insurgents are true Islama fascists who refuse to share power. We have to get the Iraqi government strong enough so they can eliminate the threat to their fledgling democracy.

It's not due to the Qur'an because of the sectarian divide.
It's actually down to politics and ethnic squabbles. The same thing happened in Europe.
Democracy can't happen within a few years it takes time. People in Iraq are civilized, people are actually coming into Iraq messing it all up like Al Qua'eda

t"They" who? There are 24 million people in Iraq. Most of the killings have been done by the United States. Nobody asked Bush to butt into their business. And again, the slaughtering is being done by the United States.
Not necessarily our troops either. There are other 'groups' being controlled and instructed by the U.S.
And stop putting all of the blame on Muslims. There are l.9 billion Muslims worldwide. If they really wanted to take over, they certainly have enough people to do so.
Criminals in the United States are no better than criminals anywhere else in the world. How in h--- are you going to "create a free and just society' when the US has tanks and other ominous vehicles laden with troops carrying guns riding up and down your streets.
Don't fool yourself. Yes there is a civil war going on there. But some other US backed groups are also operating similarly and are putting the blame on others.
And remember 'shock 'n awe' ? Who "blew up more people than the US?
and for no reason whatsoever,. Rummy had already talked to the Republican Guard. Why do you think Saddam's army wasn't ready and waiting? There WAS NO IRAQI army. All they had were some ragtag fighters who had no idea that the US and Republican Guard had come to an agreement that they weren't going to fight.
God, people here in this country don't know anything!
well, if some foreign country were to come here and were knocking down doors and killing my family, I'd be fightig back also.
It's THEIR country, NOT ours. They have a different culture. and stop comparing them to Africa...Jesus. AIDS. Here in the United States you have hundreds of thousands of people having unprotected sex and they aren't all people of color. As a matter of fact many of them are white and many of them are homosexuals who are also white and many of them are white women who thrive on oral sex.
So if we are going to tell it,. let us tell it like it is.
and yes I am a white female, age 24. But I have better sense than the majority of grown white women in this country who think nothing of lifting their skirts and spreading AIDS with any number of men. And the same goes for the men who can't keep it buttoned.

They need to be taught, the western way. Look at africa for example. they won't stop having unprotected sex and getting aids and dying even when we ship them thousands of condoms, so what we are doing is focusing on the young, the next generation to teach them to wear protection. In the Muslim world, the generation 30+ is over, they will never stop killing each other, we need to focues, or better, the u.s needs to focus on the younger generation and teach them the "better way"
