Conscious thought is that small portion of your brain's activity that you are aware of. By far, most of the work of your brain is outside conscious attention - unconscious thought.

What is the brain working on? Essentially, all the interests, problems and issues that you have. A lot goes into this thinking...sensations, perceptions, memories, imaginings, instinct, intuition, reason, analysis, evaluation, troubleshooting, categorizing, language, problem solving, decision making, planning, action, etc.

The hypothalamus directs cortical activity, peaking the energy level of the thought that should be attended to. Input to this can come from your own decision and will (prefrontal lobes of the cortex) and also from basic emotion (amygdala in the limbic system) triggered by perception.

The bottom line is, you can only concentrate on one thing at a time, can only be conscious of one aspect of thinking at a time. This limitation enables your brain to function effectively, a survival mechanism.

And that is "conscious thought."

The essential features of your conscience thought are the substitution of symbols for objects and the formation of these symbols into ideas. The symbols may be in the form of words, numbers or images. Your arrangement of ideas are then placed in a certain order in your mind. Your thoughts are represented to others by speech, writing and behaviour.

From a Buddhist perspective, thought arises due to causes and conditions, which means the moment of mind before and karma causes the next moment of mind, etc. The mind works in connection with the brain, in this "lifetime" and therefore the capability of the brain determines the ability to perceive and process thoughts.

Hope this is what you were asking for.

It's taught to you by society. Eventually when doing certain things while young people teach you it's bad or taboo, or looked down upon to do certain things. Throughout life you remember this and it becomes your guideline factor.

even the best psychologists and psychiatrists of our time have failed to produce a conclusive answer to this question. personally i think consciousness is of a spiritual nature and the brain merely channels and influences it.
