That's a good and fundamental question.
I suspect we are the police of the world because international corporations have financial interests throughout the world. That means we protect economic resources first.
Look at history... Genocide may not lead to intervention but the threat of switching to Euros for oil will.

The U.S. likes to think that they are the police for the world, but many other countries would not agree with this. It seems like we are because the U.S. has its hands in pretty much every corner of the world due to its giant economy. Because our economy is everywhere it is within the U.S.'s interest to protect its interests by promoting its own agenda.
Because the economy is so big and wealthy, it also has a lot of muscle to do the "policing." The U.S. also wants to stay on top, so it does what it can to leverage its power to keep it that way. However, history provides evidence that trying to force agendas on too many others may make spread the U.S. too thin, militarily and politically (e.g. Rome). Our "police" power may be limited and counterintuitive until the international landscape improves.

1 - because the US is the only country who can. All other militarys are pitiful compared to the US.
2 - because the US is the only one with the balls to fight for what is right. All of western Europe rolls over and lets the bad guys walk all over them.
3 - Because the US is the only country that wants other people to be free.

Because the American Government wants power. They have power but it just doesn't seem to be enough for them. Look at Goerge Bush, he's turning into another Hitler. Dam.

No one else can handle the problems or want to take up for the people. Many countries sell things to countries and don't want to lose money.

I think most countries expect it of us, even though they don't like it. They are the first to point out when we don't step in to help.
