they can mate either sexually or assexually.
assexually-fragmentation. a particale of the sponge breaks off and plants itself somewhere else.
sexually- a sponge will release its sperm and it will float around until it finds an egg released by another sponge then when mixed it travels and finds a spot and plants itself into the ocean floor. it is because of this "larval stage" that sponges are considered animals, because they are motile this one short time in their life.

Sponges release sperms which are carried to the eggs of other sponges. Sperms are swept into the sponge with the water currents. The resulting larvae are ciliated, so they can swim to another location -- a good adaptation for animals that can't move around in the adult form.
