This question is based on an answer given by "Concerned Soldier" I'm a conservative (by the way, not a bad word) and fully support our troops and the war on terror. We are there, in the middle of a war. There are deaths, on both sides. That is the nature of war. The cost of US lives in the same span of time during WWII was much higher and we didn't give up then. Even with the "extremist liberals" of their day wanting to pull us out of it. That has been true throughout our history during any armed conflict. I'm not bashing liberals. I believe the extremist right and the extremist left are detrimental to both parties and should be excommunicated so they can get back to doing what's right for the country, not what's right for the party. (Discussion for another time.) On with the question. Previous wars or armed conflicts have involved a tangible enemy. Do you believe an Army, even one as well trained, supplied, and proud as ours can defeat a concept? Leave out the political rhetoric plz.

I don't really see a way to defeat a concept except with time. To me pressure militarily and with communication into those countries defeated the concept of communism is E Europe and Russia. But this concept of Islamic fascism is different we need to be proactive and fight them not just in the Middle east but add support to other countries that are battling them such as India, Philippines, and in countries in Africa.

Im not dissin you or anything. I think alot of Americans who havent seen this war face to face forget about the why people have to die over these things. its not because of joe schmo in washington its becaue of idiot #1 who decides to gather an army and attack us out of spite for the greatness that we live in. So before you go attacking your president and who ever else look at the other side. why am i able to sit here talk all i want about him and have a rally o his door step the next day.

In Iraq, an illegal war, they see us as infidels on sacred land. When we got there the bulk of the terrorists were in the mountains of Afghanistan and Pakistan. Now they are in Iraq because we are in Iraq. If you had people coming to your country who you didn't attack and they were people you considered to be of a religion you do not understand and do not like would you fight back by any means possible. If your home and your family was in danger, in your mind, by people from another country wouldn't you fight them and try to kick them out? There is no difference over there. Our real enemy and the ones actually responsible for 9/11 are still free in Tora Bora and other areas between Afghanistan and Pakistan. Shouldn't we bring our people home from Iraq and send more to Afghanistan and Pakinstan?

No, i dont think that we can defeat a concept, just because we defeated Germany doesnt mean that there still arent people out there tourturing Jews because they belive that they are an inferior race, but it is not part of their government anymore and that is why we are over in Iraq. We are not trying to defeat the concept we are just over there getting that concept out of their government.

If it were a fair war yes.. but unfortunately terrorist don't play by the rules of war and have no intention to give in or settle any conflicts where they don't win.. they will do every thing possible even if it Intel's destroying their ways of life just to make a point.. It pathetic but true..

We backed the Shah of Iran against the evil Baathist in Iraq and supplied him with WMDs. Then we backed the Baathist in Iraq (Sadaam) against Iran and supplied him with WMDs.
That worked out real well.
We backed Eithiopia against Somalia, then we backed Somalia against Eithiopia, now we back Eithiopia against Somalia.

so far we have proved that George Washington was right.
Help one side and make enemies of the other. Our policies have made us the most hated and the most feared nation on earth.

first off, no
at least not ethically
we could do what we did in PR and put everyone in concentration camps (They were not as bad as nazi camps but it was the same idea) we couldnt miss the terrorists and guerilla warriors that way.
We might already be doing that but we wont find out for about twenty years so no use worring now
we can not defeat terrorism from the middle east but we can beat it into submission for a while (how i dont know)

We fought the same type war in 'Nam and could have won if congress would have kept their noses out of it. The President is commander in chief, not congress.

WW II, south pacific, my old man fought there in the Marines. Iwo Jima, Tinnien and Siapan were the same type battles, no lines, mainly guerrilla warfare.

I have been opposed to the war from the beginning for exactly that reason, I have never known of anyone claiming victory over an Idea, the lives that are being lost as we speak and before, are a testament to death, not victory.

The American military defeats the enemy in every battle they fight. Terrorist cowards who blow themselves up, along with innocents, do not win anything.
I believe in taking the battle to the enemy no matter how long it takes, no matter the cost, and despite the casualties. Freedom is worth fighting for.
