make sure you do a speed test at either...http://www.2wire.com or http://www.speakeasy.net
These are two sites that can helpful, call verizon and see if they offer faster speeds...I'm a sales rep for SBC/ATT and we offer 3 speeds...1.5 meg, 3.0 meg and 6.0 meg... the 3.0 and 6.0 rival anything cable providers have to offer, may like Comcast have "speed burst" where either the download or upload for the 1st like 3 seconds or 15 seconds the connection is must faster, however that doesn't benefit the comsumer that much. You want the CONSTANT speed to be the same...DSL provides that...cable is shared bandwith...there for you and all your neighbors in an X mile radius are sharing the speeds, hence the reason there service goes slower at peak "surfing" time...When all the lil Johnny and Suzzy's come home from school. It's also important to have a decent upload speed. I have seen cable net thru comcast that had download speeds of 3-5 megs however there upload speeds typically aren't more then 768 kbps. Which is crap! :) Talk to verizon see what other services they offer, also make sure you have spoken to tech support to make sure you have the best possible connection speed. Make sure your system is updated and have the the necessary systems requirements to make these "extra speeds" avail! :) good luck! :)

In my area we now have a choice of broadband isp. I always had the cable, but the Verizon people came around selling their FiOS stuff. Looks like they have 3 levels, a basic, a 768 bps, and a 1500 bps, each one more expensive. The 15 mbps costs at first about $10 less than cable, but goes up to the same as cable after a year [$49.95]. I opted to stay with cable because it is just as fast and I don't have to change any email addresses, tear up the wire setup in my apartment, have my land line phone go to battery power in case of outage, and in the end it would cost the same.
If you already have Verizon, you don't have these transition problems, and believe me, when I visit friends in Florida who won't get broadband and stick with AOL dial-up, it drives me crazy. You will enjoy the fastest dsl you can get.

Cable is faster, but not necessarily more secure, or reliable.
If you don't have cable...find-out how many MpS (megabytes per second) each will run.
