after having a bad experience with our son running up a $250 bill on text messaging, i've come to the conclusion that when they can afford one of their own, they can have one. why does everyone think they are a necessity anyway? somehow, we got by just fine w/o them when i was a kid.

Depends on the kid's maturity and ur security needs. We got them cell phones at age 15 in one case (very mature kid) and 16 in another case (immature). Guess what-- we should have never got the immature one his cell phone until he recently turned 20. The 15 yr old (now 16) is just fine. No extras (like 411 calls) is our rule. The usual family plans with about 100 min/mo/kid allowed for daytime non-verizon (or whatever) .

i got one for my daughter when she started driving. she was 16. that was several years ago though and i guess it just depends on the situation. if its for safety reasons or to just have one. alot of companies have the prepaid phones now, and you could think about doing something like that. get them a certain amount of minutes and make them learn how budget them. they can really run those minutes up...

It depends on how much time they have to spend alone. It's a good tracking device and keeps them safer. But monitor the minutes, so they aren't yakking at friends, for the younger kids.

i think 13, and if you get a pay as you go, it will shut off once they run out of minutes. you have to renew it so you can control the bill.

my kids both got there at age 14, they were prepaid phones, my daughter ,who is 17 now is on our plan, and does really good at staying below her minutes, id say start with a prepaid and see how they do, make sure they can follow YOUR guidelines! good luck.
