I do a quick scan with antivirus and antispyware every day, and a full scan once a week. I used disk defragmenter and cleanup last night.

I usually download stuff at about 200 KBs per second, but for the past few days I've only been able to download at about 50 KBs per second. Other stuff like internet explorer and pretty much everything is going slow too.

I have a good dsl internet connection so don't suggest that. I've also done scans with many antivirus and antispyware programs, so I'm pretty sure I don't have any of that.

The only thing that runs on start up is my internet. At msconfig under services everything is checked, should I change that?

That's about all I can think of... If I think of anything else I'll add it.

How do I know which processes are needed?

Hi. IE7 has some new filtering added which runs every time you go to a site or download. Some can be adjusted or turned off. This may help. Check Task Manager to find out what is actually running and shut down unneeded processes.

There are several primary areas that could be causing your computer to run slow. The most likely reason is that your registry has become corrupt, you have too many programs running behind the scenes and your system is essentially running in circles with its internal processing.
To determine if your system is in fact running slow because of problems in your registry and temp files and then speed up your computer, you will need to run a self diagnostic program called regsitry cleaner. This program is very very useful,it can fix regsitry errors, clean registry remnant, corrupt files and temp files in a few minutes. Then give you a bran-new and high-speed computer. There are collection and comparison of top rated registry cleaner:

The second most common problem is that you have spyware in your computer.Spyware not only pop up ads, collect personal info, but also can hamper your computer's performance. It use system resources and slow your computer down. Detecting and removing the programs will improve system performance.

The speed of your NIC card will limit your downloads (100mbit vs 10mbit).

Also, you may need to "recycle" (power off / on) your router, and / or renew your IP connection to "freshen" things up.

A bit more RAM may help with overall performance (1GB is a minimum these days). Also, clear your web cache.

And visit one of those web sites that helps test your upload / download speeds; download speed is affected by the "slowest" component in the network; visiting "slow" download sites, means "slow" downloads.

you can defragment the harddrive or rearrange everything to make it run better (go to control panel, then choose performance and maintanence, and select rearrange items or defragment), you can also delete programs you no longer use, or things you no longer need. put pictures from your computer to a disc to clear them off the computer, same with papers, etc.

try running the spyware scanner and anti-virus programs with the pc in safe mode ( when you boot the pc, keep hitting f8 and it will tell you how to start in safe mode.)
Some malicous programs are in your start up files and hide themselves from your scanning programs

im not sure but if you have a LOT of picture and music and movie files, then delete the ones that aren't needed. Delete old files and applications that you don't need.
