Last year I didn't start and I believe the biggest reason was because I could never get angry and pumped up to make the big hit. I play tight end and inside linebacker. I am focusing on playing linebacker. I just was wondering if someone out there has a tip for getting nasty that they use.

*Edit* another problem is getting motivated to hit my teamates during practice which is a crucial time for the coach to see what you got

I play hockey and often seek ways to get pumped myself...after trying a lot of techniques I found that having confidence works better than anything. I know it sounds gay but seriously, before games have it in your head that your the baddest SOB on the field and nobody can touch you. If you have that mental focus it will drive you to be a warrior, after a big hit talk some smack to tho other guy, let them know your coming for them. Be kind of cockey, but don't be a distraction to teammates, just be mentally prepared and your skills will all fall into place. Try it out!

You don't have to get "pumped" you just have to be focused. Concentrate on what you have to do and approach it in a business-like fashion. Set a goal, devise a strategy, and finish strong.

If you don't get pumped up easily then become a jerk. The guys that are so good that they play without emotion and still win are the guys that can piss off an entire opposing team. That's the way I went. I never really got too pumped up instead I stayed cool and collected. I was the most hated LB in our league b/c no one could upset or discourage me and I always managed to talk just enough s**t to get into the other teams' heads.

I made it to college without having ever really lit someone up. Make strong, aggressive tackles and have fun (most important).

Listen to Al Pacino's speach from Any Given Sunday (Football is a game of inches) it gets me pumped every single time i listen to it and ive played hockey for 10 years football for 4 basketball for 6 so it doesnt stop. Or another thing you could do is pretend its the playofffs in the fourth quarter and the other team is driving with 2 minutes left. Or just pretend that your Shawne Merriman.

If they don't want to get hit they won't be out there.Your not being nasty your doing business, that's part of the game. You don't have to intentionally hurt someone to make a big hit,But you can't tip toe around or you'll get hurt. Players appreciate a hard hit, not a dirty one.

Just picture yourself absolutley annihilating the other teams QB over and over again. Each time from a different angle, and make the hits seem more crushing every time. Watch some videos of WR's getting owned as soon as they catch the ball and then think of doing that all night long.

Think of all the bad things you can about the other team, and find something you dont like about the other players, even if youve never met them. Like "That #37 looks like such a jackass. Somebody should just lay his clown *** out." Bulid up as much hate and anger as you can, then take it all out on the QB, or the Running Back, or the Wide Out, or even a clueless lineman.

Just start hating the other team as much as you can. Dont forget, only hate them on the field. Once the game is over, thats when the hate stops. But, you shouldve already took out all the hate on the field anyway. Try to look as vicious and mean as you can during the game, and scare the QB, that way, your hit on him will be that much better.

Find a song that really pumps you up and play it a few times before you head out of the locker room.

I was the same way. Calm and always thinking what I was gonna do. But when I got on that field, it was over, I was a dirty as they come. Its funny because my teamates would always laugh at that. At first my coaches didn't know about me, because traditionally your suppose to be fired up, but a linebacker is bases on performance, not show. What I suggest to you, is picture yourself making that big hit and then you'll do it, be dirty, do anything to make that tackle, because once you do make that big hit, the rest will take care of itself. Trust Me and good luck. Also watch out for penaties, that was my drawback from being dirty, most on team for facemask, lol.

If you love to play football, and apparently your dying to get out on the field and prove to everyone you can start, theres nothing you need to get pumped up. All you need is determination. If you want to strike fear into your opponents hearts, do it.

To me it was always something that was always there.

There is big difference between:
A) Wanting to play football.
B) WANTING TO PLAY FOOTBALL!

You could try all the slaps, hits to the face you wanted, but it all comes down to 1 simple word:
Desire

You have to WANT it. You want to play Linebacker, then you certainly have to want it. Don't be afraid to put your fellow teammates flat on their back, ever.

Trust me, they will respect you 100%. You plant them, you hear them moan in agony....they get back up... they look at you and they say,"Damn man, nice hit."
