What is the rule? Does the rule "Ladies first" apply to this situation? Or whoever is tougher gets the arm rest? And if there is a rule, does it apply to the arm rest on airplanes?

I don't sit next to people I didn't come with for this specific reason, but on the occasion in my life when it could not be helped, it always seemed, 9 times out of 10, that it was a larger man who got the armrest.
I suggest getting there early to assert position, or when possible flipping the armrest so you can cuddle with your partner during the movie - especially if it is scary.

Actually, it's possible to share an armrest. One puts their elbow right back, and the other one can use the rest of it.

last night at the Hills Have Eyes 2 my hubby got it, he didnt really want to see the movie so i let him get as comfortable as possible
