YOU ARE A JERK! Harleys are American made goddamnit!! I buy American whenever I can! I would much rather put food in the mouths of "my" people then of people from another nation!I don't want others to starve and and I would love to see all people on this planet prosper but this nation should come first!! After all we do live here.Harleys do give an image. So what!So do cortch rockets though I think the image is of idiotic, suicidal speed! LOUD PIPES DO SAVE LIVES!! ASSHOLES don't pay attention on the roads today.I am both a tractor trailer driver and a proud Harley owner and believe me bikers can use any bit of protection they can get.People are reckless and selfish and drive like complete morons!!! I am a true road warrioer so I see this constantly! Oh and by the way...it's Harleys riders who usually participate in rides that raise money to benefit many different causes. How many croth rocketeters are doing that??!!

I have no answer for you that you will understand but I have a couple comments.
First if you ever rode a bike you would know why louder is sometimes better , but then again there is " over kill "
BUT
Your driving down the street and a car comes out of an intersection you glance at the driver and they are coming right at you with their dual 1500 watt amps driving sub woofers so hard the telephone wires are pulsating ..
Or your driving down the road along side a car and you see the driver pick up her cell phone and start dialling a number.. mean while the car weaves over the centre line ..forcing you into the on coming lane ...
Maybe too if you don't want harassment you should consider re phrasing your question "Are all Harley bikers mentally challenged " because that borders on a violation of Q & A guidleness
Do's
Be courteous. Yahoo! Answers is a diverse community of people with diverse opinions. It is up to each of us to be polite and treat each other with respect.
Dont's
Harass, threaten, insult, or behave belligerently towards others.
.
And by the way .. have you ever priced a fully dressed Harley .. they are not priced much less than you hard earned home
If you think it's too loud call the proper autorities and make a complaint there are bylaws for that purpose..
Other wise be kind be thoughtfull and hopefully you will get the same respect back ..

The people that are mentally challenged are those that drive cars and have never ridden a bike and have no concept of what it is like. Most of those idiots are afraid of the experience or just can't comprehend it.
Second of all and listen very carefully --- MOST charities get MOST of their money from bikers!!!!! Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon more money is given by Harley and the HOG chapters than any other group raising money. IF you went to a site like Boston Biker .com and looked at the events calendar it is mostly charity rides. Some of these rides are named for bikers who were killed by a driver not paying attention or respecting our right to be on the road.
No I do not ride a Harley but that is my choice. As the one lady said most bikers are professional working people both white and blue collar. Some Harleys cost more than some cars do so have respect for them.
And as a jusge once told me if you try to run me off the road or out of my lane I will call the state police and have you on felony charges for assault with a deadly weapon being a motor vehicle so you will have something to ponder in your cell.

I ride a Harley and like the louder rumble of the engine. But, there are some of my fellow riders whose bikes are way to loud. They ride down the street setting off car alarms. If you ride behind them on a trip it is very annoying. There is no consideration for others with excessive noise, especially the non-motorcyclists. Now many of these non-motorcyclist are trying to have laws passed to ban load pipes and certain communities have even posted off limit signs for motorcycles. ABATE is supporting the banning of excessive noise producing pipes because the number of riders are increasing and the noise is increasing. We need to consider others if we want to continue enjoying our freedom. Every year our city has bike week and when you have thousands of motorcycles coming in and driving all hours of the night setting off your alarms, it makes it difficult to sleep at night. I enjoy the roar of the motorcycle as you hear it come down the road but trying to be the loudest on the block does not make you the favorite neighbor in the neighborhood. One of my neighbors must either drink til 2am or work 2nd shift, He wakes everybody up when he comes home every night. Thank God for the winter months when he doesn't ride. My problem is my neighbors know I ride and don't look at me any different than they do the other guy. It is not all Harley owners and just like you wouldn't want to be stereotyped we also don't want to be stereotyped. I ride with stock pipes and have not altered the sound at all, in fact there are those who tell me, "Your bike doesn't sound like a Harley." There are many of us who aggree with you on the annoying pipes but love our Harleys. Stock pipes are not the loud pipes you are refering to, Harley sells load pipes because there is a demand for them and some guys will even remove the baffles out of these pipes as well to make them even louder. Put the blame where blame is due. By the way, more and more crotch rocket riders are doing the same because they like the whining sound they make, this is just as annoying. I have even met a few OTH's (other than Harley owners) doing the same to their bikes and since the makers are styling them after the Harley style, if you didn't know any better you would assume they were Harleys. One on my fellow riders has a Boulevard with bored out pipes and when I first saw him on it, I thought he bought a new Harley. It's a trend that seem to affect all bikers, maybe to call attention to themselves or they are Harley Wanabe's? Here in PA it is no different than the teenagers with their Honda Civics with loud pipes racing down the streets or reving up their engines or squealing their wheels to impress their friends.

I'll bet you think you're smart just because all your facts are true. Next thing you'll tell me is that 50% of Harley parts are made overseas and that Harleys finance division is having problems because there is a higher occurrence of loan default by Harley owners than by other vehicle types.

Any biker will tell you (I'm not one) "loud pipes save lives" most of them run obnoxiously loud exhausts because your average 21st century not paying attention car driver is oblivious to them unless they're annoyed by the loud exhaust and would be more likely to hit them. I can't say I disagree with the logic, I'm mindful of motorcycles because I know a lot of people that ride and I've still almost hit a couple because I didn't notice them in the next lane over etc.

Obviously, you learned a new phrase, and want to put it to use, by offending someone or some group, that you know absolutely nothing about. Just like a person who is mentally challenged, you seem to find the necessity to make others look bad, to elevate your status. I for one, am a Harley owner, Retired from the US Air Force, have a College Degree and a certified Auditor for the state that I live in. My income is probably equal to that of your whole family, but that is another story.

Bikers are not mentally challenged.. They're organ donors. Most people really don't appreciate loud vehicles (cars or bikes). The law probably never messes with you because you don't give them a reason to..Most bikes are loud and the law knows it..They can't tell anyone that has a loud vehicle to make it quiet.. That's like the law saying that we can't eat or drink..Many people would go on strike towards our government and all hell will break loose...They don't want that to happen....People just gotta deal with it

I found car drivers were blind to motorcyclists on the road "I didn't see you" is a common answer. You were looking right at me...and I got my headlight on.
I found with straight pipes and a dark jacket I would see cars in front of me, pull to the side of the road.....all of a sudden they can see cause they can "hear too"
Makes it safer for my jaunt on the road.
Oh, and I don't own a Harley.
