Unfortunately I think it has. Due to the strikes, steroids, the instead of the superbowl, a best of 7 world series, which was ridiculous this year, I think people are becoming more interested in football. The media is much more into football than baseball also. The NFL and college football have hours of pregame, where baseball only has half an hour normally, but isn't only one day a week either. What I do like is that baseball games during the regular season are still affordable at as little as $5 and there is minor league games, where you could see the players later on in the year at the big league club whereas in the football, some clubs tickets start at $30, so it isn't affordable for a family to attend games.

NFL Football finally turned the corner and took the lead as America's favorite sport after the 1994 MLB season was cancelled due to the player's strike. Baseball never fully recovered their fan base after the strike and football got an even bigger fan base. Fans just got tired of the labor strife in the game and really got turned off by the attitudes of the owners and the players alike. Football has more stringent drug rules and it seems like there is a better relationship between the owners and players.

In the Early 90's is when Football moved past baseball..... Football was getting close. Then "America's Team" the Dallas Cowboys had a huge run of success!
At the same time baseball went on strike and canceled the 1994 World Series..... many fans went on a baseball strike of their own.

If there was a date in time.... it would be the Fall of 1994.

You are all wrong. Baseball is the passtime of America's upper class. Baseball players have lost any sort of connection with the average American due to salary influx, poor play, and an increase in foreign talent. Allof these have detracted from the game's popularity, which is now FAR surpassed by NFL football in terms of revenue, attendance figures, and viewership averages both during the season and postseason.

I like baseball, especially the fact that there is a semblance of team loyalty due to the lack of a salary cap (best players are always able to be re-signed). But the violent, competitive (I would challenge the NFL is the standard of overall highest athletic competition in the world) and unbridalded excitement game in, game out of the NFL just completely outclasses baseball

Football is just way more exciting to watch. Baseball CAN be exciting, but it kind of drags on. With football, it seems like there's constant action. Plus I'm really turned off by the fact that there's no salary cap in baseball. It sickens me to think the Yankees can pay athletes that much.

Thats football marketing talking. They want you to believe it's game everyone is watching. If they say it enough, maybe you and everyone else will believe it. I love football and baseball.
I know that baseball has had an image problem from its share of trouble in the past few decades, player strikes and contract disputes, players salaries and illegal drugs. All this and players coming from other countries which has lost its true north american flavor has caused people to look at other sports. Baseball in my mind has grown out of touch with its fans. Scheduling of games at wierd times so kids can't watch or go or to have it on cable. It does nothing for its future and kids now a days don't have that local playground to go and hit the ball like I did in the 1960s. It also cost to much. Football and basketball has picked up on some of the slack. Maybe by attendance, football might have the edge, who knows.

Somewhere around the mid-eighties:

according to a 1981 CBS poll, 48% percent of Americans thought football was the best sport available.

These numbers have drastically grown. Plus, with the constant drama from guys like TO, the popularity will continue to grow, sadly enough...

Football is america's "passion" game because its more exciting to watch football, there is always action and more parity in every season...

Baseball is and always will be known as america's pastime. There isn't much of a parity in baseball, usually the same teams win year in year out...

Baseball is the national pasttime. That has not changed. That does not mean it is the most popular sport, however if you look at attendance each year...baseball leads all sports. People "pass the time" watching baseball. People engage in the NFL and NBA.
