I’m allergic to spiders (I have scars) and have tried every method on the planet to get rid of them. If you use and insecticides it will temporally kill the spiders (they will come back) that will intern breed more flying bugs, i.e.: Mosquitoes, etc. You can’t win.
There really are only a few reasons to be afraid of them (very few are poisonous) your allergic or you have relayed some other fear onto the spider (as people do with mice, etc,). Every person consumes about 8 or more spiders per year... so you eat them in your sleep. No way to avoid that. Spiders range from microscopic to huge. But they really are basically harmless; nothing really to fear.
The best thing to do is just get used to the idea; they are out there and will not hurt you in anyway. So, if you see one, just walk away. In the house (different story – kill it immediately. Check on the backs of curtains, inside cabinets & under all your furniture any where they can lay an egg sac. Smash it, they multiply in the hundreds with each egg sac). But they must live outside.
Learn to overcome your fear, I’m not saying adopt one, I’m just saying try to co-exist. They have their place in the garden same as you do. In time you can adjust to them being there. Believe me they are not going anywhere. They will be there when you’re gone. Birds can help control them but you will never be rid of them. Keep smashing the egg sacs and check all the corners & little nooks & crannies (dry places in your yard) where a spider can lay a sac and kill them. Over time you will see fewer spiders. But you must be diligent in checking for the sacs.
I’m sure this wasn’t what you wanted to hear but it is the simple truth. Try taking a class on spiders or reading up on the spiders in your area. Learning all you can about them like; which ones to really be afraid of and what should be the best environmentally friendly way to rid your immediate back yard of them.

They hate conkers so you could consider planting a horse chestnut tree - but these grow very large so only do this if you have a big garden and keep it well away from the house. I also hate spiders too, but they dont annoy me as much if they are outside. What country do you live in, by the way? If it is in the UK they wont do you any harm - but that doesnt stop me freaking out when I see one. Hope you get a solution soon so that you can enjoy your new home x

I hate spiders, too! and snakes and grasshoppers...eww. But as for spiders, unless they are black widows or brown recluse spiders, I really don't think you have to worry about them doing you any serious harm. They are probably there because you have lots of other bugs that they like to eat. If you get rid of their food, they will go elsewhere. Attracting birds is a good idea, as well as bats. Try putting up a bathouse. They will eat thier weight in flying bugs and insects every night.

Best thing to do is encourage birds and cats, cats do love to chase and eat spiders for some reason, and birds are one of the only things quick enough to catch the damn things.
I am a spider magnet, and though I don't like them at all, I am used to them now. You should see the size of some of them I get in my house, I could ride some of them! I had one in the bath a few weeks ago that was wearing boots! I just hoover them up now, but if they are too quick for me and get away I'm not too fussed. They are gross, but they can't hurt you, even if you spent the day covered in them, you would survive! Just remember that! They don't wanna spend time with you either, they are running away from the vibrations they feel when you walk out there, they have very poor vision, even though they have millions of eyes.
I recommend having a look on a website and learning a little about them, it won't cure your phobia, but it will stop that horrible shock you get when you see one, if you spend a bit of time everyday for a few weeks looking at a few pics of them, they will lose their scariness. It is the way they move that causes a reaction in our minds apparently, so if you can atune yourself to that you won't mind seeing them flee everytime you go out there, and though after 27 years of living in ancient houses full of them certainly hasn't made me want to touch them, I no longer run screaming from them, or am too fussed if one pegs it under the couch.
I do get a bit annoyed when they surprise me on the shower curtain though!
My star sign is cancer, if you are cancer or scorpio then you will naturally attract them, or so I have been told! Not too sure if that's true, but in my case it seems to be!

Look for the Victor brand of natural insect spray. Big yellow can (I find it at OSH Hardware). It does not contain pesticides.
I spray around the outside foundation of the house and in door and window corners, and find that it works as a good 'preventative.'
I've heard that spiders taste through their feet and they must not like the oils in this product (but it does smell very nice to me!)

when new homes were built behind ours, bulldozers disturbed areas that had been left natural for years. the deer left and the spiders came to our house. hundreds and hundreds of wolf spiders. they were everywhere! when one crawled into bed with me and bit me ( i had flu like symptoms for 2 days), we called the exterminator. he said it was the worst infestation he'd seen in 20 years. then they came back into the house the next fall. we again called the bug guy. finally, we mentioned our problem to a friend and we were told to collect hedgeapple tree fruits and place them around the perimeter of the house. it worked. we do this every fall when the fruit falls and haven't had a problem since. maybe you could try tossing them around your yard.

Leave a lot of birdseed around. Birds will come and eat the spiders. Also make little frog shelters so that frogs will come and eat them as well
