We should already have colonies on other planets. It was possible. But now it might be too late. Humanity is at the peak of his energy production curve, which will now begin to decline, but our demand for energy will continue to rise. That means energy will become much more expensive, which means that there will be less interest (and there never was much interest) in investing energy in ways that don't pay off QUICKLY.
The main utility of a space colony is preserving culture from a global calamity on Earth. One example of such a calamity is a large asteroid striking Earth. Another example is the already mentioned depletion of terrestrial energy resources. The asteroid might or might not strike, but the collapse of civilization from fossil fuel depletion is certain to occur during the 21st century.
Space colonies would serve to preserve, and, later, reseed civilization on Earth. They would safeguard knowledge and wisdom, art and science, music, prose and poetry, from being eternally lost.
But, as I said, it may be too late, now, to create colonies on Mars, or on the moon, or inside asteroids. I think we've had our chance and missed it. Look up the words spoken by Sir Fred Hoyle in 1964.

It's unlikely that we'll find a planet that is the right temperature and has the right atmosphere for us. And there's the travelling time to get to the planet.
As for the "should"- if we do find a suitable planet there's the moral issues of whether it would be right to play around with an alien planet- if it's inhabitable for us then there might be native life there which we could destroy. Maybe we should leave the planet alone and not interfere or maybe we should colonize it as somewhere to go if- or when- the earth becomes uninhabitable.

I believe plans have been underway for decades to colonize Mars. Obviously, Earth is becoming a very dangerous place, and is less hospitable as a planet, than it has been in a long time. And the powers to be have already worked out how many humans will re-locate to Mars. And I'd bet you anything, that plans are for white people only to evacuate the planet Earth.

Right now our attention in this respect should be focused on Mars. There is no reason why we should not establish some form of permanent colony on Mars in the near future, other than economic unwillingness and lack of foresight.
We should begin by terraforming Mars so that we can live there, starting with spreading lichen spores. We already send probes up there regularly, one of these probes should be equipped with a container of lichen spores genetically engineered to operate best in Mars atmosphere and temperature. This will begin to build a soil and over time transform the atmosphere into something humans can deal with.
Yes, we should do this, we should not limit ourselves to earth. for one, earth alone cannot support us. Also, earth is doomed to become inhospitable to humanity sooner or later and Humanity is worth continuing on past that. Exploration is part of the human experiance, as much as art or music.

well with the right amount of money and will we could be having the first mars colonizers by now!.
If we should... yes sure, but we have to remember that we are not the Spanish or the British colonizers, whom killed all the natives, we should do it with responsabilityin case that we find any live forms, earth has limited mineral resources, and we must start find them else where... but we must never allow the earth to get to the point of making the earth inhabitable, cuz it is OUR HOME, the first we knew, and the last that most of us will ever know about... we must begin to develop environmental enhancement technologies, cuz the water cant be ended... we need it! and the biodiversity as well.
so yes we shoul start looking for alternative places to live but taking care of our beautyful home.

I think we will be here till mankind comes to an end.
Colonizing a planet is a long nontrivial task.
It's impractical, will never save us from our greatest enemy.terrorism.
I believe we are doomed to live out our days on earth.
I wish it could be something else but it probably will not be!

in step with danger in diverse hundred years or by no capacity. in step with danger: Mars is the only possible candidate planet on which human beings can land. at latest, we've not got the technologies to maintain a small group alive for the 22 month around trip to Mars. A small group on Mars for an exploratory trip would desire to technically be referred to as a colony. previous the technologies barrier, the fee of transporting a very few human beings, kit, components and gasoline for the trip could bankrupt the full Earth. it fairly is perplexing to get a sense for how far away Mars is, or how costly it fairly is to get something off the Earth. by no capacity: as far as consumer-friendly human beings residing their lives and elevating households on Mars as they could in a village, it’s no longer possible (apologies to technology fiction followers). The problems are giant. An severe volume of help from Earth could be required for the colonists in basic terms to stay alive. the coolest purchase of on an usual basis existence could prefer extreme technologies to end on Mars. With a single malfunction, all or maximum could die. the floor of Mars and area frequently is the main opposed atmosphere human beings have ever experienced. it may be far much less perplexing, extra low priced and safer to construct a village on the backside of the sea. Sorry, this one Earth is all we get. .

Hi. We have a lot of 'home improvement' to do on Earth. But it is always nice to have a 'Summer home'. Personally I would hope to see us on the Moon. Shorter trip. But just as harsh.

we can't yet, but we will have the capacity one day.....we know there are other planets out there, but because they're so far away there are difficulties finding out if they're habitable for humans and actually getting there if they are habitable. yes, we should
